Excerpt from A General History of Porcelain, Vol. 2 A little porcelain factory was established here in a factory where faience had been previously made, about 1777 - 78, by two potters, father and son, named Vermonet, who are said to have had the authorization or the patronage of the Due d'orleans to sell their wares in the region of Melun. The privilege is believed to have been granted for a period of fifteen years, and this appears to have been about the duration of the enterprise. The porcelain is of good white paste, and the pieces are well made and finished with a good glaze. The pieces attributed to the factory comprise table ware, tea and coffee services, vases and ower-pots, usually decorated with bouquets of owers painted in a naturalistic style, and finished with neat and precise gilding in good solid gold. Excerpt from A History and Description of English Porcelain For many years there has been real need of a work on English Porcelain which should occupy the gap between the elaborate monographs of single factories by Binns, Haslem, and Owen, and the admirable but brief general sketch by Professor A. H. Church. The present volume is an attempt to remove this deficiency by giving, on a sufficiently extended scale and with adequate illustration, a connected and comprehensive account of the origin and progress of porcelain making in England. Though the mere fact that the author is a practical potter cannot in itself prove sufficient qualification for such a task, the experience necessarily gained in the daily routine of a factory must be of value in attempting to appraise the work of the potters of past generations. For the first time, at all events, the historical and artistic development of English. Porcelain is interpreted by the light of technical and scientific knowledge gained in the industry itself; the fruits of years of study of museum collections and documentary and traditional information ripened by still more years of experience in actual manufacture. Having no prejudices in favour of any particular individual or factory it is only natural that my views should not always coincide with those of writers whose work has been conceived in a vein of personal eulogy, which puts impartial criticism out of the question.
