Based on the 1995 Henson Lectures, delivered in the University of Oxford, this study takes as its theme the Christian future, and the development of a theology of generosity in response to the challenges likely to face Christian faith in the twenty-first century. In particular, Professor Newlands wishes to explore the suggestion that Christ represents the ultimate generosity of God for humankind. This leads him to concentrate on the contribution made by Christian doctrine to public issues, and especially the relationship between Christology and human rights. The author is centrally concerned that faith should remain in the public square, and that the circle of faith should always be outward facing. The result is a liberal, pluralistic theology, which regards the generous love of God, in incarnation and reconciliation, as a powerful stimulus to imaginative Christian thought and action. In its robust portrayal of what Christianity ought properly to look like, this book--which emerges from the pen of the leading Scottish liberal theologian of his generation--will be sure to stimulate and engage a wide variety of readers.

What if, for more than fifty years, you worked hard to research the New Testament without denominational filters? And then what if you were to organize that research by subject matter? Well, that is what I have done in these two volumes of “Blueprint for a Revolution: Building Upon ALL of The New Testament.” What follows is a catechism of apostolic, true Christianity. It is a body of teaching that flows out of taking all New Testament teachings in a grammatically natural and literal sense, the way we instinctively read all serious literature. Testimony from the earliest Christians is also presented, demonstrating that what those earliest churches taught and lived out was typically identical to what you conclude when you take the New Testament doctrines, commands and promises in that same sense. In those many years of research, I have never come upon a single church or book that provides a specific set of principles (a.k.a., “exegetical method”) by which all Biblical passages are to be interpreted, and that has then set about to consistently surrender to those principles in all the subjects that it covers. My claim, therefore, is that this is the only such catechetical work that does just that. The importance of this book does not lie mainly in the specific conclusions of any individual chapter, and certainly not in any of my literally skills at presenting those conclusions. It lies largely in the juxtaposition of teachings that are often thought to be in conflict with each other only because the traditions that hold to the beliefs in those chapters have been in conflict with each other. It is my contention that what Jesus considered to be “my church” is what is taught within these chapters, the church that is an incarnation of His “kingdom of God”!

Many young people in King County, Washington, are not connected to churches, schools, workplaces, and other organizations. Many of them live in povertyand they also lack education, skills, and spiritual care. In this thesis project, Julie Lamay Vaughn, founder of Hope Angels Ministry, argues that marginalization occurs when people are systematically excluded from meaningful participation. The thesis project seeks to answer questions such as: What are King County community leaders doing to help young adults who are marginalized? This book develops three models to help answer that question: inquiry, artefacts and imagination. Legal language, it is argued, contains artefacts – forms that signal their own artifice and call upon us to do things with them. To imagine, in turn, is to enter a distinctive epistemic frame where we temporarily suspend certain epistemic norms and commitments and participate actively along a spectrum of affective, sensory and kinesic involvement. The book argues that artefacts and related processes of imagination are valuable insofar as they enable inquiry in adjudication, ie the social (interactive and collective) process of making insight into what values, vulnerabilities and interests might be at stake in a case and in similar cases in the future. Artefacts of Legal Inquiry is structured in two parts, with the first offering an account of the three models of inquiry, artefacts and imagination, and the second examining four case studies (fictions, metaphors, figures and scenarios). Drawing on a broad range of theoretical traditions – including philosophy of imagination and emotion, the theory and history of rhetoric, and the cognitive humanities – this book offers an interdisciplinary defence of the importance of artefactual language and imagination in adjudication.

We live in a world where our livelihood depends on our ability to relate to strangers. The central quality that defines strangers is that they are unknown. Because strangers are unknown, they represent, in the world outside, the unknown self within. The unknown self is the core of the personality considered as a potential to become something yet to be determined. To be already known is to be determined prior to and independently of our presence in our lives. At the outset of the process of taking form, the individual is, in a sense, a stranger to self and to others. The more this is the case, the greater the openness of the process of self-formation and the more marked the role of freedom from predetermination in that process. Freedom from predetermination exists along three dimensions: the free movement of thoughts and ideas or "inner freedom"; the freedom to relate, which is also the freedom not to relate; and freedom in relating, which is the possibility of maintaining secure self-boundaries in relations with others. In exploring freedom understood in this way, Professor Levine considers such topics as: the nature of inner freedom and its relationship to deliberation and choice; stranger anxiety and its connection to group dynamics and social connection; the internal factors that enable us to make the decisions that shape our lives and through our actions realize the ends embedded in our decisions; how our memories shape our thought processes and therefore the choices we make and the lives we lead that result from them; what makes it possible for us to live comfortably with and depend on people we do not know; concern for the welfare of strangers and how our welfare can be secure in a world where we do not care about others and they do not care about us.
