I can probably write a hundred books on things I've seen and experienced over the years growing up in a hostile ghetto environment in The Bronx N.Y. If you didn't grow up here and you're not familiar with inner city life, some of the stories you hear from people who have been here all their lives will definitely surprise you. As a poet, I decided to write about my life experiences, views etc in a poetic form. Some of it is fiction and use of imagination just to keep the reader entertained, while still incorporating real life scenarios and situations. Sometimes people don't fully understand where you're coming from and why you are the way you are until they hear your background and life story. This is just one book of many more to come because life in the Ghetto is more times stranger than fiction!

The Fall of a Sparrow is the only full biography in English of the partisan, poet, and patriot Abba Kovner (1918–1987). An unsung and largely unknown hero of the Second World War and Israel's War of Independence, Kovner was born in Vilna, "the Jerusalem of Lithuania." Long before the rest of the world suspected, he was the first person to state that Hitler was planning to kill the Jews of Europe. Kovner and other defenders of the Vilna ghetto, only hours before its destruction, escaped to the forest to join the partisans fighting the Nazis. Returning after the Liberation to find Vilna empty of Jews, he immigrated to Israel, where he devised a fruitless plot to take revenge on the Germans. He then joined the Israeli army and served as the Givati Brigade's Information Officer, writing "Battle Notes," newsletters that inspired the troops defending Tel Aviv. After the war, Kovner settled on a kibbutz and dedicated his life to working the land, writing poetry, and raising a family. He was also the moving force behind such projects as the Diaspora Museum and the Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature. The Fall of a Sparrow is based on countless interviews with people who knew Kovner, and letters and archival material that have never been translated before.

For more than 70 years a diary that was written in Bialystok during World War II was virtually unnoticed and about to be discarded with trash when someone looked inside and discerned its historic value. It was written between 1939 and 1943 by young David Spiro (in Polish Dawid Szpiro) who probably died during his city’s ghetto uprising against the Nazis. The diary described life in the city during Russian and then German governance from the perspective of an ordinary young man - certainly not a charismatic leader. As David explained, “If someone reads my diary in the future, will they be able to believe something like that? Surely not, they will say poppycock and lies, but this is the truth, disgusting and terrible; for me it’s a reality.” With permission from the current owners, much of David Spiro’s poignant first-hand account is reproduced here along with memoirs written by other Bialystokers who lived and mostly died during those terrible times.

The Black Manifesto, addressed "to the white Christian churches and the Jewish synagogues in the United States," was presented by James Forman to the Black Economic Development Conference in Detroit and adopted in April 1969. Among other things the Manifesto demanded that the churches and synagogues pay $500 million in "reparations to black people." Robert S. Lecky's and H. Elliott Wright's Black Manifesto: Religion, Racism and Reparations is a collection of eight essays reflecting upon racism and the churches in the light (and heat) of the Manifesto. The editors have themselves contributed a useful introduction that sketches the background out of which the Manifesto emerged, documents the responses of the white churches to it and considers the case for reparations. (Adapted from the New York times, March 15, 1970)
