The Ghost In The Corner And Other Stories written by Lord Dunsany and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05 with Fiction categories.

The Anglo-Irish fantaisiste Lord Dunsany (1878-1957) was immensely prolific. Author of more than a dozen novels, hundreds of stories, essays, and poems, and more than fifty plays, he infused every single work with his unique blend of fantasy, weirdness, and subtle humor. S. T. Joshi and Martin Andersson, two of the leading authorities on Dunsany's work, have spent years in unearthing uncollected works by Dunsany, and the present volume is the result of their labors. Here we find stories set in Dunsany's native Ireland, evoking the real or imagined ghosts, leprechauns, and spirits that haunt that ancient land. Other tales are set in locales around the world, reflecting Dunsany's far-flung travels through the Middle East and Asia. The core of the book is a presentation of an untitled short story collection that Dunsany assembled in 1956 but that was never published. Here we find some of the lost jewels of Dunsany's output: "The Dwarf HolObolos and the Sword Hogbiter," a splendid sword-and-sorcery tale that evokes such early masterpieces as "The Sword of Welleran"; "The Dance at Weirdmoor Castle," a delicate tale of ghosts; "The Stolen Power," in which the horrors of the atomic age are pungently expressed; and "A Goat in Trousers," a story of metempsychosis treading the borderline of humor and horror. Also included in this volume are several previously unpublished tales, found among the manuscripts at Dunsany Castle in County Meath, Ireland. No reader can fully appreciate the prodigal fertility of Lord Dunsany's imagination without appreciating the diverse and unfailingly entertaining stories in this volume.

A Guidebook To Monsters written by Ryan J. Stark and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-23 with Philosophy categories.

Ryan J. Stark surveys the classic monsters in great literature and film, television, the Bible, and, perhaps unexpectedly, the world in which we live. Monsterdom is real, Stark observes, but often hidden beneath the concealment spell of modern secular thought. This guidebook aims to break that spell, and, if so, to confirm once more a world that brims with high strangeness, or what Christian philosophers have always called "reality." The book appeals to those who study the paranormal dimensions of religion and horror, broadly imagined. The clergy will also find it helpful, as will players of monster-riddled video games.

Roads Of Excess Palaces Of Wisdom written by Jeffrey J. Kripal and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-12 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

William Blake once wrote that "The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom." Inspired by these poetic terms, Jeffrey J. Kripal reveals how the works of scholars of mysticism are often rooted in their own mystical experiences, "roads of excess," which can both lead to important insights into these scholars' works and point us to our own "palaces of wisdom." In his new book, Kripal addresses the twentieth-century study of mysticism as a kind of mystical tradition in its own right, with its own unique histories, discourses, sociological dynamics, and rhetorics of secrecy. Fluidly combining autobiography and biography with scholarly exploration, Kripal takes us on a tour of comparative mystical thought by examining the lives and works of five major historians of mysticism—Evelyn Underhill, Louis Massignon, R. C. Zaehner, Agehananda Bharati, and Elliot Wolfson—as well as relating his own mystical experiences. The result, Kripal finds, is seven "palaces of wisdom": the religious power of excess, the necessity of distance in the study of mysticism, the relationship between the mystical and art, the dilemmas of male subjectivity and modern heterosexuality, a call for ethical criticism, the paradox of the insider-outsider problem in the study of religion, and the magical power of texts and their interpretation. An original and penetrating analysis of modern scholarship and scholars of mysticism, Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom is also a persuasive demonstration of the way this scholarly activity is itself a mystical phenomenon.

North and South Carolina are steeped in history—some of it supernatural. The “custodian of the twilight zone” shares their spookiest tales (Southern Living). Nancy Roberts, known as the “First Lady of American Folklore,” is a topnotch storyteller and one of the few who both write and tell their own stories. For more than two decades, Ms. Roberts has documented ghost stories and interviewed hundreds of people throughout the United States. A nationally known author of twenty-three books, Ms. Roberts began her career with a series of ghost stories written for The Charlotte Observer. Carl Sandburg sent her word that her stories were good, suggesting “they should be a book.” Since then her books have won her a certificate of commendation from the American Association for State and Local History and a nomination for the Great Western Writer’s Spur Award. Ms. Roberts has a special love for encounters with Southern specters. A native of North Carolina, she grew up listening to the ghost stories of the Old South. In this collection of her favorites, Ms. Roberts tells of the phantoms who haunt the Carolinas and the people who have witnessed their appearances firsthand. Praise for Nancy Roberts “Just about everybody likes a good ghost story. And ghost hunter/author Nancy Roberts has put together as shivery a selection of other worldly tales as you’re likely to find anywhere . . . And whether you believe in ghosts or not, these tales are guaranteed to give you a chill, especially before you go into a dark room alone.” —Southern Living
