Float written by Anne Carson and has been published by McClelland & Stewart this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-12-31 with Poetry categories.

From the renowned classicist and MacArthur Prize winner: a brilliant new collection that explores myth and memory, beauty and loss, all the while playing with--and pushing--the limits of language and form. Anne Carson continuously dazzles us with her inventiveness and the way her work changes our perspectives. With Float, she surpasses her own bar. In individual chapbooks that can be read in any order, she conjures a mix of voices, time periods, and structures to explore what makes people, memories, and stories "maddeningly attractive" when observed in liminal space. One can begin with Carson puzzling through Proust on a frozen Icelandic plain; in the art-saturated enclaves of downtown New York City; atop Mount Olympus as Zeus ponders his afterlife. There is a three-woman chorus of Gertrude Steins embodying an essay about "falling." And an investigation of monogamy and marriage as Carson anticipates the perfect egg her husband is cooking for breakfast. Exquisite, heartbreaking, disarmingly funny, Float illuminates the uncanny magic that comes with letting go of boundaries. It is Carson's most intellectually electrifying and emotionally engaging book to date. From the Hardcover edition.

Brown-Eyed Girl is a collection of poems and photography born from the author's heartache, transformed into vulnerable and inspirational art. I have been many things in my life, but in my subconscious core, I've always been a writer. I've been telling stories and creating worlds for as long as I can remember. I wrote poems as a young girl, but it wasn't until the pandemic lockdown that I rediscovered this part of myself at the bottom of heartache. Overwhelmed with loneliness, poetry poured out of me. As my sadness faded, I shelved my poetry journal. Weeks later, mesmerized by the sun and inspired by joy, a poem meandered into my mind. I had been operating under the false belief that artists had to be in pain to create; realizing any emotion could create art was a revelation. Positive poems burst out of me. Months after that, an intuitive told me to bask in the bliss of the book I was writing. I told her I wasn't writing a book. One day, while writing a poem on the beach, I realized I rarely read my poems after writing them. I simply let them flow out of me and moved forward with my day, feeling a little lighter. Approximately 55 poems were in my journal, full of gladness and sorrow. I flipped to the very first page and read what I had written on March 18, 2020: A Book of Poems by TF. Chills covered my body: this was the book. Half of this book was born of longing when I was isolated during the shutdown, while the other half emerged from a place of happiness and power. Everyone is made of darkness and light; one cannot exist without the other. The contrast between them is what makes life meaningful. So much of the beauty in our lives is born of situations that, at the time, felt earth shattering. Brown-Eyed Girl is for everyone. If you've had a broken heart, been in love, felt something while reading poetry, are passionate about photography, or feel deeply, this book is for you. May my words and photos within these covers inspire you to look for love within yourself and to express gratitude for the beauty that surrounds each of us. I dare you to pick up a pen and write about your feelings, start your own self-care practice, chase your dreams, and live fully. I began writing poems to heal myself. That led to the realization this book had begun without my knowing, and here, to this very moment, you are holding its physical manifestation. Anything is possible. No aspiration is too big. Dream. Create. Believe.

"These letters reveal the thoughts of two fine, strong minds drawn to each other first by their interest in socialism, then by their love of poetry and a similarity of ethics and ideals. My mother recognized this in his early prose and poetry. They learned so much about each other from these letters, yet it seems extraordinary that there was so little personal contact."-- From the introduction by Margaret Sandburg

Transnational Belonging And Female Agency In The Arts written by Basia Sliwinska and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-20 with Art categories.

Transnational Belonging and Female Agency in the Arts interrogates the politics of space expressed via womxn's artistic practices, which prioritise solidarity and collaboration across borders, imagining attentive geographies of difference. It considers belonging as a manifestation of processes of becoming that traverse borders and generate new spaces and forms of difference. In doing so, the book aims to catalyse mutual social relations founded upon responsibility and response-ability to each other. The transnational framework activates concerns around belonging at a time of intensified divisions, partitioning global narratives, unequal trajectories and increasing violence against bodies of the most vulnerable, largely founded on Eurocentric paradigms of political, economic and cultural superiority. The contributors engage in a conversation signalling transversal thinking and artmaking in order to articulate and activate 'in-between' spaces. This is to welcome co-affective models of belonging that question versatile embodiments of subjectivity as both agentic and as interrelational. Organised around the triangulation of modes of belonging: spatial, affective and collective, overarched by a transnational lens that acknowledges non-hierarchical, local and socially relevant genealogies against universalising politics of globalisation, these essays consider afresh ways in which female agency disrupts borders and activates concerns around different forms of belonging, citizenship and transnationalisms. Shojo manga are romance comics for teenage girls. Characterized by a very dense visual style, featuring flowery backgrounds and big-eyed, androgynous boys and girls, it is an extremely popular and prominent genre in Japan. Why is this genre so appealing? Where did it come from? Why do so many of the stories feature androgynous characters and homosexual romance? Passionate Friendship answers these questions by reviewing Japanese girls’ print culture from its origins in 1920s and 1930s girls’ literary magazines to the 1970s “revolution” shojo manga, when young women artists took over the genre. It looks at the narrative and aesthetic features of girls’ literature and illustration across the twentieth century, both pre- and postwar, and discusses how these texts addressed and formed a reading community of girls, even as they were informed by competing political and social ideologies. The author traces the development of girls’ culture in pre–World War II magazines and links it to postwar teenage girls’ comics and popular culture. Within this culture, as private and cloistered as the schools most readers attended, a discourse of girlhood arose that avoided heterosexual romance in favor of “S relationships,” passionate friendships between girls. This preference for homogeneity is echoed in the postwar genre of boys’ love manga written for girls. Both prewar S relationships and postwar boys’ love stories gave girls a protected space to develop and explore their identities and sexuality apart from the pressures of a patriarchal society. Shojo manga offered to a reading community of girls a place to share the difficulties of adolescence as well as an alternative to the image of girls purveyed by the media to boys and men. Passionate Friendship’s close literary and visual analysis of modern Japanese girls’ culture will appeal to a wide range of readers, including scholars and students of Japanese studies, gender studies, and popular culture.
