Questa antologia è costituita da due deliziosi ritratti di protagoniste femminili: "La signora di Riondino" e "La marchesa Falconis". Il primo, considerato la più bella opera narrativa dell’autore, è la storia intima e delicata di una donna colpita dal vaiolo che attende il rientro di suo marito partito per la guerra. Questo evento la porterà a interrogarsi sulle conseguenze della malattia sul suo matrimonio. Il secondo racconto è invece incentrato sulle vicende di una famiglia aristocratica, la cui discendenza dipende ormai dall’adozione di un figlio illegittimo... Edoardo Calandra (1852 – 1911) è stato un illustratore e uno scrittore italiano. Calandra esordisce come pittore di quadri ispirati a vicende storiche realmente accadute, per poi abbracciare il mondo dell’illustrazione editoriale. Le sue opere letterarie riprendono lo stile verista di Giovanni Verga, si svolgono principalmente in Piemonte e analizzano l’avanzare della classe borghese su quella aristocratica. Tra i suoi scritti ricordiamo "La bufera", "Vecchio Piemonte", "Ad oltranza" e "A guerra aperta".

La signora di Riondino: Published in 1906, "La Signora di Riondino" was judged to be the most beautiful story by Edoardo Calandra, as well as one of the most beautiful things of the early twentieth century in Italy: "... it represents the soul, fears, anxieties of this young beautiful lady hit and disfigured by smallpox, during the absence of her husband who is away at the war (against the French in Staffarda, in 1690): will he still like her? Will she still be loved by him? She faces her fate: in male dress she is accompanied to the field where her husband fights, she can see him for an unseen moment but, before meeting him, she dies killed by chance by a soldier.
