Excerpt from A Handbook of American Speech The recent revival of interest in Oral English has met with one serious obstacle. It finds few teachers trained in Oral English and able to teach it. No one now questions the desirability of more attention to the oral side of the subject than has been given in the past, but many superintendents and principals hesitate to introduce oral work for lack of properly trained instructors. There is little doubt that before many years adequate oral endowment and training will come to be a necessary part of the English teacher's equipment. Meanwhile ways must be devised for instructing pupils in the elements of accurate and effective speech. Excerpt from American English The following pages are the development of a chapter on the same subject in the author's earlier book, "Our Common Speech," published in 1895 and long out of print, that chapter being itself the development of a paper read before the Albany Institute in 1882, printed in the Tenth Volume of the Transactions of that body, and also printed, in somewhat different form, in the North American Review for January, 1883. Several sentences relating to the early bibliography of the subject, included in the Albany Institute paper and repeated in "Our Common Speech," appear with some alterations in the preface of the Sylva Clapin "Dictionary of Americanisms"; and as they appear again in the book now in the reader's hand, it seems advisable to state the facts, lest possibly the present writer might be suspected of plagiarizing from Mr. Clapin. Excerpt from The American Language: A Preliminary Inquiry Into the Development of English in the United States I am thus neither teacher, nor prophet, nor reformer, but merely inquirer. The exigencies of my vocation make me almost com pletely bilingual; moreover, I have a hand for a compromise dialect which embodies the common materials of both languages, and is thus free from offense on both sides of the water - as befits the editor of a magazine published in both countries. But that compromise dialect is the living speech of neither. What I have tried to do here is to make a first sketch of the living speech of these States. The work is confessedly incomplete, and in places very painfully so, but in such enterprises a man must put an arbitrary term to his labors, lest some mischance, after years of diligence, take him from them too suddenly for them to be closed, and his laborious accumula tions, as Ernest Weekly says in his book on English surnames, be doomed to the waste-basket by harassed executors.
