Excerpt from The Medieval Church Architecture of England But the question of names is of secondary importance. The primary consideration is whether such a fundamental difference as I affirm really exists between the pointed architecture of the Ile de France and all other pointed styles. The question can be determined only by a systematic examination and comparison such as I have attempted in this book. Excerpt from The Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England HE revival of our ancient parochial church architecture is a subject which occupies much attention at the present time; after three centuries of demolition and neglect, the solemn structures raised by our Catholic ancestors are being gradually restored to somewhat of their original appearance, and buildings which but a few years since were considered as unsightly and barbarous erections of ignorant times, are now become the theme for general eulogy, and models for imita tion. To the English Catholic there is no class of religious edifices of greater interest than the ancient parish churches of this country. The are admirably suited to the present wants and necessities of the Church, nor is it possible to adopt, con sistently, any other models for the greater portion of our ecclesiastical buildings. Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. I desire to express my grateful thanks to all who have kindly assisted in the preparation of this work, to the deans and canons-in-residence who have often guided me by their counsel during my study of their cathedrals, and also to the vergers who have readily afforded me much valuable help. More especially do I wish to thank the Deans of Lincoln, Ely, Chester and Gloucester, Canon Tristram of Durham, Bishop Anson of Lichfield, and Archdeacon Richardson of Southwell, for their courtesy and kindly interest. I have also to record my obligations to the work of many previous writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Ecclesiastical Architecture of England, Vol. 1: During the Middle Ages, With Ten Illustrative Plates The subject of the present Treatise has given' rise to so much and such earnest debate among the learned and ingenious, and has occasioned so many publications, and such a variety of systems concerning it, as cannot fail of exciting the wonder of persons iinsensible to the grandeur and beauty of Pointed Architecture, and unacquainted with the merit of its invention. Excerpt from Irish Ecclesiastical Architecture: With Some Notice of Similar or Related Work in England, Scotland and Elsewhere I started with the resolution that, as far as possible, I would have seen for myself all the buildings which I had occasion to cite. This ideal - as is so often the case with ideals - I have not fully reached, but I have approached it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Essay on the History of English Church Architecture Prior to the Separation of England From the Roman Obedience This is but an essay upon a subject to do justice to which a treatise of many volumes would be required. It has, however, a distinct and definite aim, which should give a unity to what would otherwise appear heterogeneous in its composition. By the greater or less success with which this aim is attained this little work must be judged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Recent English Ecclesiastical Architecture In planning a modern church it is the business of the architect to discover the general lines which will produce the best possible building under given conditions. Oi these conditions, those of cost, of situation, and of material are in very few cases exactly alike. But, as our churches are built for a definite purpose, there are certain conditions of space and arrangement which should in no case be disregarded. The publications referred to have left little to be said upon these matters, yet it is obvious from what we see every day that the existence of a fairly well understood set of rules does not ensure our possessing a worthy architecture. To secure this, our architects must cultivate their imagination and their sense of proportion; above all, they must take pains. The most hopeless of our modern churches are not so often the work of inexperienced men as the routine productions of diocesan surveyors' ofiices.
