Excerpt from A History of England, Vol. 3 of 7: England in the Later Middle Ages Have to acknowledge my great indebtedness to Mr. L. Stampa both for reading through the greater part of the ms. Of this book and suggesting emendations and alterations and for his invaluable help in the preparation of the maps. I should add that in constructing the map of Northern England and Scotland I got much help from Professor Tout's similar map in Vol. III. Of the Political History of England, and that my map of England during the Wars of the Roses owes a similar debt to the map in Dr. Poole's Historical Atlas (f Modern Europe. The necessity of compressing a very important period, covering 213 years, into five hundred pages, has caused much to be left out which I should have liked to see inserted. The original manuscript has been cut down by some 100 pages from the shape in which it left my hands. I should like to add my warmest thanks for Professor Oman's kindness and consideration to me throughout the preparation of the book. This volume of The Cambridge History of the Book in Britain presents an overview of the century-and-a-half between the death of Chaucer in 1400 and the incorporation of the Stationers' Company in 1557. The profound changes during that time in social, political and religious conditions are reflected in the dissemination and reception of the written word. The manuscript culture of Chaucer's day was replaced by an ambience in which printed books would become the norm. The emphasis in this collection of essays is on the demand and use of books. Patterns of ownership are identified as well as patterns of where, why and how books were written, printed, bound, acquired, read and passed from hand to hand. The book trade receives special attention, with emphasis on the large part played by imports and on links with printers in other countries, which were decisive for the development of printing and publishing in Britain.
