Excerpt from A History of Greece From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest It has been thought advisable frequently to omit details and events of minor importance altogether, in order that room might be given for bringing forward more prominently those which have exercised an in uence upon the world at large, and have taught grave political lessons to all generations. Some few of the political and social phases which the Hellenic communities went through, the author has ventured to illustrate by a reference to events of more modern times, and ideas familiar to modern readers. A few biographical anecdotes have been here and there interspersed in order to render the drier details of history more interesting to the young, for whose use more especially this little work is intended, but a selection has been made of those which are the best authenticated. The literary history necessarily occupies but a brief portion of the volume, but sufficient, it is hoped, to make the reader in some degree acquainted with the progress and development of Greek intellect, and to induce him to pursue the subject further in larger works. The View of Greek philosophy is of course still Shorter and more incomplete, but a longer notice would have involved the necessity of entering upon difficulties too great for such a work as this, and it is hoped that enough has been said on this subject to Show how the wisest of men had to feel after God. Excerpt from A History of Greece: From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest, With Supplementary Chapters The works of Dr. William Smith, on Classical Biography, Antiquities, and Geography, are so well known in the United States, that any commendation of them would be superfluous in this place. The History of Greece published by him in 1854 is marked by excellences similar to those of his other books, and is, beyond all question, the best summary in our language of the ancient history of that country, for the use of schools and colleges. The editor of the present American republication has carefully revised the text, and corrected a number of misprints which escaped the author in the original English edition. In one place, a passage of some length is inadvertently repeated in nearly identical terms; the repetition, in this edition, has of course been omitted. In the Chronological Table, the heading of the third book is omitted; that omission has been supplied. An attempt has been made to introduce a greater degree of uniformity in the spelling of the classical names. The example of Grote and other high authorities in English literature is now beginning to be followed, and English usage, in this respect, is gradually conforming itself to that which has been established among the scholars of Germany. Still I have not ventured to carry out the principle in a causes, having limited myself generally to those in which an opposite practice has not been irrevocably fixed. With regard to the Modern Greek names, I have followed the orthography of the Greek rather than of any other language. A Smaller History of Greece: From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest is intended to be an introduction to Greek history appropriate for students on the high school level. The book is divided into twenty-two chapters and provides a fairly broad and all-encompassing dissection of Greek history. The first chapter details the geography of Greece and includes a number of maps to serve as a visual aide to students. From there, the book takes a chronological approach to telling the history of Greece. The book begins its history in 776 BCE, telling the story of the development of language and writing in Greece. The book proceeds through Greece's history, offering short chapters on many of the most significant events in the history of the Mediterranean nation, from The Persian Wars to the supremacy of Sparta to the death of Alexander the Great and Rome's conquest of Greece. Those unfamiliar with Greek history will surely appreciate the survey approach adopted by Smith in the writing of this textbook. Excerpt from History of Greece, and of the Greek People, Vol. 3: From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest; Section II HE war still raged in Sicily when the Spartans, following the perfidious counsel of Alkibiades. Invaded Attika and fortified Dekeleia. Fifteen miles from Athens. Agis. The Spartan king, posted himself there. And thence ravaged the country unremittingly. Thucydides says (vii. 27. For previouslv the invasions were but of brief duration, and did not prevent their enjoying their territory at other times; but now that the enemy were continually stationed there, they were deprived of their whole country. More than twenty thousand slaves had deserted, a great part of them being artisans; and all their sheep and beasts of burden were lost. Their horses also. As the cavalrv were dailv on the move, making excursions to llekeleia and keeping guard in the country, were either lamed bv being worked on rocky ground, and that continually, or were disabled by wounds. The conveyance also of provisions from Euboia, which was before efiected more quickly by land from Oropos through Dekeleia, was now carried on with great expense by sea round Sounion. Indeed, the city required everything to be imported, and instead of being a city, it was reduced to a garrison. For the Athenians were harassed by keeping guard on the fortifications, in succession by day, and all of them, excepting the cavalry, by night, - some being on duty where the arms were piled, and others on the walls, - both summer and winter alike. At this time they imposed on their subjects the tax of a twentieth on all sea-borne commodities, instead of the tribute, thinking that thus a larger amount of money would be raised by them. For their expenses were not on the same scale as before, but much greater, inasmuch as the war also was greater, while their revenues were being destroved.
