Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 1 of 2 Tas plan of the little work begun in this volume has been considerably enlarged since it was first undertaken, and the author fears that a critical eye may be able to detect some traces of this variation from the original de siguin the manner of treating one or two subjects. He would be glad if he might believe that this was its chief defect. But he is most desirous that the object which he has had in view should be understood. Excerpt from A History of Greece From the Earliest Times to the Present, Vol. 1 of 2 There remains for me the pleasant duty of tendering my warmest thanks to my friend and associate in the New York School of Languages, Professor Henry C. Miller, to whom I am indebted for many valuable suggestions and criticisms. The difficulties which beset the historian in treating a subject so vast as the fortunes of the Hellenic nation, coupled with the obstacles which a foreigner, however much he may admire the beauty and manliness of English expres sion, must unavoidably meet in conveying his thoughts in a language not his own, may to a certain extent explain the reasons on account of which the author, after years of earnest labor, has fallen short of the lofty ideal he has aimed at the graphic representation of Hellenism from its earliest stage to the present. Excerpt from The History of Modern Greece, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Conquest by the Romans, B. C. 146, to the Present Time In the composition of the following pages it has been my object to supply information, so far as it was possible, regarding those later events in the history of Greece, of which our accounts have hitherto been imperfect and unsatisfactory. With this view I have passed rapidly over the era which has been treated of by former writers, and confined my attention principally to the period subsequent to the reign of Justinian, during which the annals of the country have been almost totally neglected. Excerpt from History of Greece, Vol. 2: Section I He had no need, with his own influence united to that of Mega kles. Of this clumsy stratagem. The gates stood open to him; but to return with more solemnity he put himself under the protection of the goddess. Instead of having her statue carried, as was usual, he showed her living image; and there was so little attempt at con cealment in the whole matter that he married the pretended god dess to one of his sons shortly after the conclusion of the ceremony. Excerpt from History of Greece, Vol. 1: I. Legendary Greece; II. Grecian History to the Reign of Peisistratus at Athens The first idea of this History was conceived many years ago, at a time when ancient Hellas was known to the English public chicfly through the pages of Mitford; and my purpose in writing it was to rectify the erroneous statements as to mat ter of fact which that history contained, as well as to present the general phaenomena of the Grecian world under what I thought a juster and more com prehensive point of view. My leisure however was not at that time equal to the execution of any large literary undertaking nor is it until within the last three or four years that I have been able to devote to the work that continuous and exclusive labour, without which, though much may be done to illus trate detached points, no entire or complicated subject can ever be set forth in a manner worthy to meet the public eye. Excerpt from History of the War of Independence in Greece, Vol. 1 of 2 The events which have, of late years, taken place in Greece, are so interesting in themselves, and so likely to be of considerable influence on the future history of the world, that the proprietors of Constable's Miscellany have deemed that they could not select a subject more likely to prove acceptable to the public, than the narrative of the War of Independence in Greece. They proposed the task of writing it to me; and after some hesitation, I agreed to undertake it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stories From the History of Greece, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Period to Its Final Conquest by the Romans; Adapted to the Capacities of Children The History of Greece has always held an important place in the course of Liberal Edu cation. It is the link between Sacred and Profane History. When a knowledge of the events recorded by the former has been ac quired from the perusal of the Holy Scrip tures, the Grecian History continues the series, and points out the secondary means which led to the accomplishment of those foretold by the inspired writers. It is also the source wherwe we derive much information as to the origin of most of the sciences that improve and adorn society. Excerpt from The History of Greece, Vol. 2 In the same measure in which the Greek settlements had overspread every coast, the mainland of the Greeks had continued to narrow and decrease. For the Greek nationality was so essentially based on a particular civilisation, that all the members of the Greek race who took no part in its progress, however near in respect of their habitations, appeared to be excluded from the nationality; whereas the remotest regions in which a fortunate settlement had enabled Greek civilisation to fix its roots belonged in every sense to the Greeks. After this fashion the land of Greece had separated from the body of the mountain-country stretching to the north of the AEgean; in other words, the peninsula-country had separated from the mainland. In Epirus a number of tribes akin to one another first possessed a common sanctuary, in connexion with which they afterwards received a common name (vol. i. p. 104). The sacred oak of Dodona put forth its leaves as late as the age of the Antonines; nay, the oracle of Zeus survived for centuries the end of the history of the Greek people, and, as its primitive sanctuary, always remained an object of veneration.
