Excerpt from A History of Education in Pennsylvania: Private and Public, Elementary and Higher, From the Time the Swedes Settled on the Delaware to the Present Day The present History was begun many years ago, and has cost a vast amount of labor. That it is correct in all its details, covering as they do a history of two hundred and fifty years, is not to be expected, the sins of omission in particular must be numerous, and some of them may appear inexcusable; but it is believed that the narrative presents, as a whole, a fair picture of what has been done in Pennsylvania to educate the people. At least an honest, patient effort has been made to accomplish that end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania: Official Guide To acquaint the members of the Student Guides' Association, and others, with the physical equipment and resources of the University of Pennsylvania, and to assist the students and friends of the University in escorting visitors through the institution, the editor prepared, in 1904, a pamphlet descriptive of the principal buildings and objects of interest, which was the first edition of this Guide Book. The present edition is illustrated and has been greatly enlarged. It is hoped that the book will prove itself invaluable to all who may have occasion to use it. The editor is indebted to many officers of the University for the assistance given him in the preparation of this edition, and is under obligation to Rev. Oliver Huckel, Mr. J. Hartley Merrick and Mr. Joseph G. Rosengarten for material on portraits owned by the University; and to Prof. Warren P. Laird, the Deans, and other officers who revised the material on their respective departments. The illustrations are from the large collection of negatives made for the University by the editor. No attempt has been made to give an exhaustive historical account of the University, to include any historical illustrations, or to give a detailed description of each of the departments and the buildings connected therewith. The primary object of the Guide is to acquaint the public with the present resources of the University. Those wishing detailed information on the courses and various departments are referred to the general catalogues and departmental publications, and those desirous of looking up the historical development or any phase of University history or college life are referred to the list of publications printed in the appendix to this edition. Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania, 1740-1893: The History of the University and Its Present Work The Wharton School and the School of American His tory represent each a new idea in American education. The former was founded as an experiment in the education of busi ness men, and as a preliminary to the law, journalism or public life and has eminently justified the foresight of its founder. It recognizes the need for a broader preparation than has usually been given in the fields just mentioned, especially that of gen eral business. The quality of work done in the school is best shown in two volumes, one on The Development of American Industries, prepared and published by the Class of 1891, and the valuable work on Philadelphia and its Government, which has just been published by the Class of 1893. The school's success is also seen in the places held by its graduates, and the high praise accorded it by such a body as the American Bankers' Association. The special Work of the school is done in the Junior and Senior years. An excellent library in economics, history, and public law is owned by the school. Excerpt from The Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania: An Historical Outline The history of the movement for introducing wo men into the full practice of the medical profes sion is one of the most interesting of modern times. This movement has already achieved much, and far more than is often supposed. Yet the interest lies even less in what has been so far achieved than in the oppo sition which has been encountered; in the nature of this opposition, in the pretexts on which it has been sustained, and in the reasonings, more or less disin genuous, by which it has claimed its justification. The history, therefore, is a record not more of fact than of opinion. And the opinions expressed have often been so grave and solid in appearance, yet proved so frivolous and empty in view of the subse quent event, that their history is not unworthy of careful consideration among that of other solemn fol lies of mankind. Excerpt from The College of the University of Pennsylvania: April, 1899 All College Freshmen are examined early in the year by the Director of Physi cal Education. The system used is that of Dr. Sargent. A course of exercise is then prescribed for those showing irregularities of physical development, which may be carried out in the College Gymnasium in College Hall, or in the Gymnasium in Houston Hall. Subsequent examinations are made to observe the results obtained. A large section of the University's grounds, known as Franklin Field, is devoted to outdoor sports. An excellent running track, one-fourth of a mile long, encircles the field. One side of the track is extended in both directions beyond the end curves, affording a straight-away course of two hundred and twenty yards. A shorter covered track for use in cold or inclement weather, a rowing tank and a base ball cage are amongst the other facilities maintained by the Athletic Associa tion for the use of the students. It is impossible to speak in detail of the different events which take place upon Franklin Field. During the autumn the University and class foot ball games are the principal attraction, which give place in the spring to track and field sports and the baseball games. The intercollegiate and inter academic relay races, which are held early in the spring, have now become an annual fixture, and deserve particular mention on account of the prominent position they have taken in the world of college athletics. At some time during the winter it is customary for the gymnastic team to give an indoor exhibition of their powers. Excerpt from The History of the University of Pennsylvania: From Its Origin to the Year 1827 The first colonists of Pennsylvania, were, perhaps, less ne gligent in providing the means of elementary instruction,7 than those of mest of the other settlements. In the year 1689, only seven years after the foundation of Philadelphia, a public school was established in this city, by members of the Society of Friends, which was 1ncorporated in 1697, and after undergoing various changes in its organization, re ceived, in 1711, a final charter from William Penn. Pif teen discreet and religious persons, of the people called Quakers, were constituted a Board of Overseers, and were vested with all the property and privileges of the corpora tion, together with the right of supplying vacancies in their own numbers George Keith, a native of Aberdeen, a man of learning, and famous in the history of the Friends, was the first teacher employed. In the school were taught the Latin language, the Mathematics, and the rudiments of an English education. Though supported by funds derived from the Society of Friends, and under the exclusive direc tion of members of that society, it was open indiscriminate ly to individuals of all religious denominations and for more than sixty years, continued to be the only public place of instruction m the province. Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Franklin's College: Being Some Account of Its Beginnings and Development, Its Customs and Traditions, and Its Gifts to the Nation Our University had its origin among a number of plain citizens of Philadelphia who organized themselves in 1740 to found and build a Charity School upon broad, catholic lines. The greatest of all Americans, Benjamin F ranklin, put it into proper form and gave it being. In his plan for the school he urged useful things and he secured the active interest of the most useful, influential and trusted citizens to serve upon its Board of Trustees. So, as our motto indicates, character building has been the chief aim of the institution from its origin. Excerpt from Early History of the University of Pennsylvania: From Its Origin to the Year 1827 Smith, D.D., Provost of the College, Academy, and Charitable School of Phila delphia, by Charles J. Stille, in 1869; and, in the same year, a History of the Med ical Department of the University of Penn sylvania, from its foundation to 1865, by Joseph Carson, M.D. The information contained in Dr. Stille's excellent memoir was afterwards used, with additions, in a Life of Dr. Smith by his great-grandson, Horace W. Smith, two volumes, octavo, 1879 - 1880. Some of these works have been long out of print, and the remnants of the editions of others have been virtually withdrawn from the channels of trade.
