The book, cast as an autobiography, covers the life of James Meredith Pullin who was born in England, went to Western Australia as a young man and farmed in the wheatbelt before joining the Australian Army at the outbreak of World War 2. In the 2/11 Battalion he was involved in several close combat battles against the Italian Army at Bardia, Derna and Tobruk. After the defeat of the Italians the battalion moved to northern Greece to meet the invading German army. He was involved in rearguard action back down the peninsular harassed by Messerschmitt fighters. He was then evacuated to Crete on a ship which was the subject of Stuka dive bombing attacks. At Crete he was part of the force given the task of defending the Retimo aerodrome. On the 20 May 1941 a large force of German paratroopers were dropped over Retimo and he was involved in close combat with the German force which resulted in many deaths of both Australian and German soldiers. He was eventually captured and transported to the infamous Salonika camp where prisoners were starved, mistreated and suffered dysentery and other diseases. This was followed by an awful journey to Munich in enclosed cattle trucks with little food or water and no toilet facilities. He was then a prisoner of war at Stalag 7A , Stalag 8B and Stalag 357 for 4 years. The book provides a detailed account of his experiences which he was lucky to survive, in an objective ,unemotional but sometimes amusing manner. After the war he returned to Western Australia and settling on a War Service farm near Kellerberrin.

This ancient Noongar Dreamtime story is told in the words of Elder Cliff Humphries, one of the last fluent Noongar speakers in the world. It formed part of his body of work presented in Bennell v. State of Western Australia securing native title for the Noongar nation in 2006. This story was a favourite of Elder Humphries, and contains sacred songs as sung by the Elder. It tells of Kwergan the Crowman and his Maali (black swan) wives, describing the movement of Noongar between maang-art Jam Gum country in the East, Bibbulmun country in the West, and salt-lake country near Kellerberrin. The story is beautifully Illustrated by Elder Humphries' great grandson together with the children at the Perth Waldorf School, under the direction of Elder Cliff Humphries' direct descendants, honouring their father's wishes that the millenia-old stories of the Noongar Bibbulmun, and the language and traditions embedded therein, be shared with all West Australians. A must-read for all those committed to reconciliation and the revival of Noongar language and culture.

Social historians will look back on the 1980s as a period when a global consciousness of the environment developed. Stimulated by major issues and events such as oil and chemical spills, clearing of rainforests, pollu tion of waterways, and, towards the end of the decade, concern over the greenhouse effect, concern for the environment has become a major social and political force. Unfortunately, the state of the environment and its future manage ment are still very divisive issues. Often, at a local level, concern for the environment is the antithesis of development. The debate usually focusses on the possible negative environmental impacts of an activity versus the expected positive economic impacts. It is a very difficult task to integrate development and conservation, yet it is towards this objec tive that the sustainable development debate is moving. The issues in the central wheatbelt of Western Australia are typical of the environment versus development debate. It is undoubted that the development of the area, which involved clearing the native vegetation, has had a major impact upon the original ecosystems. Many of the natural habitats are threatened and local extinction of flora and fauna species is a continuing process. Moreover, there are clear signs that land degradation processes such as dryland salinity are depleting the land resource.
