Excerpt from Lutheran Mission Work Among the American Indians These unpretentious pages are sent forth in the hope that the friends of missions may be in formed as to what the Lutheran Church has done and is doing in bringing the Gospel to the Red Man. The author has collected and put into convenient form the facts of this half-forgotten work, of which no complete treatment has ever appeared, but which is worthy of an adequate presentation. As natural in a book of this kind, his indebtedness to others is large. This refers especially to chapters Ill and IV. In other parts the author has not hesitated now and then to adapt or to take over an adequate rendering. The Bibliographical Notes at the end of the book will give a more detailed account of the sources. However, every effort has been made to verify facts and statements, and to render the account as clear as possible. For the work being done at present the missionaries themselves have been constant and will ing helpers. Sincere thanks are due them for their ungrudging co-operation. The manuscript dealing with their particular mission was submitted to them, tho the author alone must be held responsible for mistakes and shortcomings that may occur. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. The Gossner (Berlin II.) Missionary Society in India. "Thou old Adam in me die!" "Live Lord Jesus!" The Gossner Society, though not strictly Lutheran, has a great many Lutherans in its service. Pastor Gossner organized the Society in order to train missionaries for different missions. The founder withdrew from the Berlin Society because his plain habits and practical spirit did not approve of the extensive educational methods, the commodious quarters for the students and the society. He held that missionaries ought to support themselves by industrial work. With these objects in view, he in 1836 undertook the instruction of young men, and by 1837 he had seven married and four single missionaries prepared to labor in the foreign field at their own expense. The first missionaries proceeded to South Australia, under the direction of Dr. Lang, a Scotch minister. The Scotch Church on the island promised to make up the deficiency in case the missionaries could not provide for their whole support. An effort to plant a Christian colony at Calcutta proved a failure. A second colony followed. While in that great city, uncertain which way to turn, the missionaries noticed men of a peculiar type among the coolies. Upon inquiry, they learned that they were Kols from Bengal. The missionaries, who had been sent to India with the impressive instructions of Gossner, --" Believe, hope, love, pray, burn, waken the dead! Hold fast by prayer! Wrestle like Jacob! Excerpt from Documentary History of the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America The volume, herewith brought to the attention of the public, has not been written in the spirit of controversy, though the earlier chapters necessarily deal with a period of Lutheran history during which the church was agitated by conflicting views concerning confessional and doctrinal questions, which caused alienation among brethren and divisions in synods and congregations. The point of view taken by the author is that of an interested and impartial student of history, and in later years an active participant in the manifold operations of the General Council. The presentation is, as far as possible, an objective one, based on well-established facts of history and official documents. Its chief aim is to present to the present and future generations of students of history valuable historical material, which is no longer easily accessible, since it is contained largely in publications of a temporary character, such as printed minutes, pamphlets, and newspaper articles, copies of which cannot now be easily secured.
