Excerpt from A Genetic History of the New England Theology The chief peculiarity of the style of the book is the large use made of quotation from the authors discussed. My object has been, not merely to secure thereby the true objec tivity of the report I have given, but also, in the certainty that very few of my readers will have access to the originals, to-give them an acquaintance at first hand, though brief, with these pioneers and fathers of our theology. Excerpt from Sketches of the Theological History of New England In sketching the history of my own denomination, and of others which have arisen, I have endeavored that my state ments should be fair and truthful, and not of a nature to give needless ofl'ence. Never was there a nobler band of Christian men and women than the first settlers of New England. Yet they fell into some errors, and made some mistakes, - mis takes which might have been fatal to their enterprise, had not God arrested the natural course of them by the outpour ing of his Spirit. Let us endeavor to profit by their mistakes, as well as by their noble example; and let us seek our s'e curity at all times, in the favor and blessing of our covenant God. Excerpt from Characteristics of New England Theology: A Discourse Delivered at the First Public Anniversary of the Congregational Board of Publication, at the Tremont Temple Boston And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledges; Yea, he gave good heed, and sought out and set in order many proverbs. The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. At the last year's anniversary of this Society, it first assumed the name which it now bears, and which it will probably retain while it shall exist. Its original name was "The Doctrinal Tract and Book Society;" the title by which it is now known, is, "The Congregational Board of Publication." The latter designation is, indeed, less comprehensive, less assuming, than the former; but in assuming its present more specific and exactly descriptive name, it will gain, we trust, far more in efficiency than it has lost in comprehensiveness of title. Excerpt from Sketches of the Establishment of the Church in New England The object contemplated in this small volume of Sketches, was, to give as succinct an account as possible of the introduction of our Holy Religion, and the foundation of its early churches, to assist, at least partially, the future historian, who will write of the several Dioceses, of which there are already five, where a few years ago there was but one, embracing the six New England States. To the honor and glory of God, and to the spiritual advantage of thousands, as already seen, has been the erection of these Dioceses, in which so many churches, academies, convents, schools, confraternities, and other religious, literary, and benevolent Institutions have been introduced. First published in 1907, this text provides a scientific treatment of New England theology and American dogmatic history. Frank Hugh Foster analyses the eighteenth-century rise of the school of New England theology, which became the dominant school of thought in New England congregationalism and, as argued by Foster, a ‘world phenomenon’. The chapters arise from readings of the various distinguished views of such contemporaries as Jonathan Edwards, Joseph Bellamy and Samuel Hopkins, placing them within the historical and theological context in which they developed. A fascinating and detailed title, this reissue will be of value to students of theology and Church history with a particular interest in the development of American religious thought.
