Excerpt from Sketches of the Establishment of the Church in New England The object contemplated in this small volume of Sketches, was, to give as succinct an account as possible of the introduction of our Holy Religion, and the foundation of its early churches, to assist, at least partially, the future historian, who will write of the several Dioceses, of which there are already five, where a few years ago there was but one, embracing the six New England States. To the honor and glory of God, and to the spiritual advantage of thousands, as already seen, has been the erection of these Dioceses, in which so many churches, academies, convents, schools, confraternities, and other religious, literary, and benevolent Institutions have been introduced. Excerpt from Church History of New England, From 1620 to 1804: Containing a View of the Principles and Practice, Declensions and Revivals, Oppression and Liberty of the Churches, and a Chronological Table Few Of his favoured brethren Of this generation, are adequately impressed with a sense Of their indebtedness to the labours Of this departed champion Of their cause. He was unquestionably one Of the most useful ministers that has ever appeared among the American Baptists. For fifty years, he was a laborious servant Of their churches; and for more than half this period, he diligently devoted what time he could spare from professional du ties, to historical researches. The vast fund Of materials which he thus accumulated, must have sunk into entire Oblivion, had it not been for his unwearied care. As a preacher he was entirely evangelical: pungency, pathos and power, characterized many of his discourses, which though unornamented with rhetorical language, were richly stored with scriptural truth. Excerpt from An Historical Sketch of the First Fifty Years of the Church of England in the Province of New Brunswick (1783 1833) In the following pages an attempt has been made to give the reader some account of The First Fifty Years of the Church of England in the Province of New Brunswick. Short as is this sketch, it has not been hastily written. More than three years have been employed during the intervals of professional occupation in collecting and digesting materials, in verifying facts and dates, and in communicating with persons who could speak upon the subject, either from personal or hereditary knowledge. It has been my constant endeavour to give correct information, and to this end I have sacrificed almost everything. The task has been rendered somewhat difficult from the fact that there exists very little information respecting the early Church in New Brunswick. Had this work been undertaken some years ago many interesting and valuable facts now lost would have been secured. Excerpt from Reminiscences of a New England Church and People Chestnut Street, where the tall graceful Spire, one hundred and sixty-five feet in height, was seen against the delicate tracery of the top branches of the old elms, some of which had probably stood there as long as the church. On both sides of the street are some of the finest of the colonial houses for which Salem has been famous. It is near the centre of the city, very accessible, but very quiet, a block away from cars of all sorts. I remember that many years ago a gentle man of the neighborhood spent two years abroad and on his return said, that he had seen nothing in Europe that he liked better than Dr. Emerson's steeple. Spoken of in that way during the life of the old clergyman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It ap peared impossible to secure either for the lectures or for the book an historical narrative from a member of the Roman Catholic communion. The Committee feel that the book ought not to be issued without at least some word recognizing the contribution which that Church has made to the Religious History of New England. Excerpt from History of the New England Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church: 1796 1910 All previous Conference histories, we are told on good authority, have been attended with financial loss. The New England Conference now adds to the many special triumphs and signal distinctions recorded in the follow ing pages this, that it publishes a history at a considera ble profit. Before this work was fully entered upon enough subscriptions for it had been easily secured to pay all expenses; which is as it should be.
