Excerpt from A History of the Free School of Andover: Latterly Called the Andover Grammar School, With Numerous Illustrations We, the author of this work, believe that a history of the Grammar School at Andover has never before been written, and that this work is "a new thing," notwithstanding the sweeping assertion made by a certain wise man of the East some twenty-eight hundred years ago. At the same time, judging from the time and labour expended upon this work, we are fully in accord with that sage's dictum in respect of the making of many books - namely, that to such an undertaking there is no end, and that a great weariness of the flesh is his portion who studieth overmuch. To apologize for our "poor little book" would scarcely be honest, but an explanation of the great discursiveness therein committed requires explanation, and the reason for such is two-fold, namely to give our readers an insight into the conditions of life at Andover at certain periods of the schools existence, and for-purposes of reference in case other volumes of Andovers history should ever be completed. We offer warm thanks to our many helpers, viz.: - For permission to study the town archives: R.T. Moore, Esq., Mayor of Andover, 1917-18;and T.Webb, Esq., Mayor of Andover, 1918-19 and 1919-20. For the same privilege in respect of the church registers, etc.: Rev. Walter E.Smith, M.A., Vicar of Andover. For allowing access to Titheridge's MS. Report upon the archives of Andover: T. E. Longman, Esq., Town Clerk of Andover. For a similar facility in regard to the archives of the Andover Charities: P. E. J. Talbot, Esq., Clerk to the Charily Trustees, etc. For allowing access to the wills, etc., at the Probate Registry in Winchester: Alfred Musgrave, Esq., Senior Registrar, Somerset House, London. For similar facilities in respect of the Enclosure Awards of 1740 and 1785: A. H. M. Butler, Esq., Librarian to the House of Lords, and H.Barber, Esq., Ll.B., Clerk of the Peace for Hampshire. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXIV THE LURE OF THE GAME Fresh faces in the Gym appear. New knives cut other names; Fresh sinners carry on, I fear, Our very same old games. Athletics in Phillips Academy mean far more than the yearly struggles with Exeter. The good old doctrine of "sport for sport's sake" has always been part of the academic gospel, and boys are led to stretch their muscles for sheer delight in physical exercise. It has been the ambition of the school to arouse in the undergraduates a love for games, not so much for the victory which may be won--although it would be hypocrisy to pretend that success is undesirable--as for the pleasure of matching skill against skill, brawn against brawn. To this end there should be games of every sort, for the strong, for the agile, for the swift--even for the feeble and the clumsy. Schools, within the last half-century, have learned that the care of the body is an essential part of education. After the "stone shell of a building " on Chapel Avenue was given to Professor Stowe as a home, the "theologues" and the "cads" had a gymnasium in common in a large wooden structure in the rear of the Seminary, which was scantily equipped with apparatus. Samuel W. Abbot in 1853 received a ticket entitling him to the privileges of the "Phillips Gymnasium." In presenting this card to the school many years later, Dr. Abbot wrote: --To the daily use of this Gymnasium in 1853-54 I have been wont to attribute improved health while at Andover and years afterward in a constitution not naturally robust. On July 24, 1865, the Trustees, after the burning of the Stone Academy, resolved that, when the new Main Building was finished, the old "Brick Academy" should be fitted out as a gymnasium. Within a year they appropriated $1000 for...

Excerpt from A History of Abbot Academy: Andover, Mass;, 1829 1879 As the Trustees of Abbot Academy requested its Principal and her First Assistant to write the History of it, plain justice requires that one of the Trustees should prefix certain statements which the historians have omitted. The authors of the volume have paid a due tribute of praise to every Principal who has preceded them in the government of the School, but have given no prominence to the work performed by themselves. For one and twenty years they have devoted their zeal and strength to the advancement of the Academy. Thus have they illustrated the benefits resulting from permanence in the administration of a school. They have per-severed in laboring on one simple plan, and that plan has been one of regular progress. It is not fitting that their historical volume should be published without a distinct recognition of some particulars in which this progress has been apparent. 1. A new importance has been given to the History and the Philosophy of the English Language, as a branch of education for the young ladies of the Academy. One sign of the degree in which this department has been systematized and enlarged is the printed Statement of "Topics on the History of the English Language." This Statement was prepared by Miss Phebe F. McKeen. It contains carefully selected references to the books which illustrate the science and development of the language. It stimulates the pupils to investigate for themselves the philological topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
