Excerpt from History of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, Vol. 4 George I. Senet, Esq. Mr Dear Sir: In committing to the press this concluding volume of the "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church," I would gratefully acknowledge my obligations to you. If I have succeeded, to any satisfactory degree, in my task, it has been largely owing to the reliefs which your kind attentions have afforded me from cares and anxieties, that would have seriously interfered with it. Your honored father appears briefly in my narrative; tho first collegiately-educated native preacher of his Church, except Fisk, and a man of most sterling talents and character, the friend and co laborer of Bangs, Emory, Soule, Ostrander, Rice, and the other strong men of tho second generation of American Methodist preachers, ho will be 0110 of the most interesting subjects of the later history of his denomination. The Church is happy to recognize in you the worthy son of so worthy a father. It finds, in this its third generation, the descendants of its early and heroic itinerants not only thronging its ministry, but founding, on enduring financial bases, its educational and other great institutions. In my former work (the "History of the Religious Movement of the Eighteenth Century, called Methodism," etc.) I brought the narrative down to 1839, the Centenary of British Methodism, and designed to conclude the present work at the same period. There was no important reason, however, for the latter purpose, as American Methodism has its own distinct centenary. But it would be us inexpedient to extend the record to the latter duto as to limit it to the former, our recent controversies cannot yet be satisfactorily narrated; the chief actors in some of them are still living, the families of many of the actors in the earlier ones still survive. There is also a hopeful tendency of reunion among our denominational parties which should not be disturbed by a return, however guarded, to their old disputes. Not till years hence can the historian safely review these unfortunate events. I have had a twofold design in this narrative: first, to show the real development of Methodism on this continent, its interior life, and its junction conditions; for in these two must find the best lessons of its history for all time. Secondly, to keep within such chronological limits os should not require an inconvenient number of volumes, and yet should allow of a substantially complete history of tho Church, of its inception, its organization, its chief personal agents, its theological and disciplinary systems, and finally those adjuncts of its practical system - publishing, Educational, Sunday-School, and Missionary institutions - which have, for the present at least, rounded, if not perfected its scheme. Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 3 It being desirable to have the alphabetical list of preachers unbroken, it has been thought advisable to transfer that list from the second to the third volume; and the more so as that volume is sufficiently large without it, containing, as it does, upward of four hun dred pages. Excerpt from The History of Methodism Within the Bounds of the Erie Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 1 The history of Methodism, when completed, will form one of the brightest pages of ecclesiastical history our redeemed world has produced. To accomplish this as it should be, each section of the work should gather up its own materials and preserve them until our great general historian gets ready to compile the whole into one extended chain of connected facts, which his pen will beautify, until like a glittering rainbow it will span the moral heavens, and give promise of the future immortality of its happy subjects. In sending forth this volume from the press, we desire to say to the reader that we have long felt the importance of rescuing from a threatened oblivion an account of the great work of God along the south shore of Lake Erie, in which so many good men have spent their lives in toil and sacrifice for the great Redeemer, but delayed the undertaking, hoping that some person, with more leisure at command and higher qualifications for the work would devote him self to the task. Excerpt from Journal of Rev. Francis Asbury, Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 3 of 3: From January 1, 1801, to December 7, 1815 Thursday, 29. At Sweet's chapel I preached on Rev. Xxii, 14, 15. The order, 1. The city. 2. The citizens. 3. Their admission. 4. The characters shut out from the city. I felt light and liberty. Friday, 30. We came to the Bear Pond's school-house, where we had a decent, attentive congregation. I preached on John vii, 16, 17 Introduction - It was observed that the dispute of the Jews with our Lord about the Messiah, was not if he should be the eternal Son of God, and the adopted son of man, but whether Jesus was that person whom Moses foretold that Church and nation should come, and what man ner of person he should be, fifteen hundred years before. The Jews knew where Christ was to be born from Micah v, 2. See also Matt. Ii. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
