Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy IN preparing this volume the writer has been animated by a desire to tell, in one convenient volume, that might be sold at a moderate price, the whole story of our navy - to describe all the important naval battles, and to show how the nation has been affected at certain times by the work of its naval ships, and at other times by the want of such a force. All battles that have had any influence upon the wars in which the nation has been engaged, or upon the evolution of ships of war, or upon the character of our naval men, or of the nation, have been deemed important herein. Any con sideration of the facts shows that our sailors were animated, in most of their battles, by the knowledge that they were fighting for the very life of the nation, and it is therefore not too much to say that a description of such a fight must be a hero story, however told. Frankly, it was in the be lief that every history of our navy claims attention first of all as a hero story that this one was written. Excerpt from A Short History of the United States Navy This history owed its origin to the need of a work suit able in scope and treatment as a text-book for the midship men of the United States Naval Academy. Since, in a tentative form, it has been used by them with gratifying results, there is hope that it may prove of interest and value to others whose time for this subject is limited. It has been written with certain definite aims, the principal of which are the following: First, to present a record of exactly what happened, without personal, sectional, or national prejudice. Second, to regard naval events from the professional rather than the picturesque point of view; for example, to emphasize the maneuvering and gunnery in an action rather than the smoke and blood. Third, to suppress the trivial and bring o'ut the important, not neglecting the services of officers in time of peace. Fourth, to give, whenever possible, the original sources, such as letters from secretaries of the navy, and official reports of officers. These official reports, we feel, are of singular value. The fighter writes as he shoots - straight to the mark. He may be prejudiced in favor of his own flag, but his account is usually more sportsmanlike than are the corresponding accounts of his countrymen who were not there to see, and has a unique interest that no rewriting ever attains. In the following pages will be found reports by both friends and foes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy, Vol. 1 of 3: From 1775 to 1901 Our war with Spain has not only altered the map of the world, but it has materially enlarged the history of the United States navy. Not merely a few chapters, but an entire volume has been added, substantially changing the perspective in our naval history. In the present third edition of this work efforts have been made to do justice, not only to our wood and iron navies of the past, but to the later triumphs of our steel fleets. Many important changes, suggested by experience and later information, have been made in the text of Volumes I and II, so that it is believed the record of our navy from 1775 to 1866 as given in these two volumes is complete. Excerpt from History of the Navy of the United States of America The new matter introduced into this edition, has been obtained from sources that are believed to be authentic. It is considerable in amount, and in several instances of importance; though so much dispersed through the two volumes, as probably to escape the atten tion of cursory examination. As instances of its value, we refer to the capture Of the Hancock, 32, during the war of the revolution to the loss of the two sloops on Lake Champlain, in 1812; to that or the two schooners on Lake Ontario, in 1813, and to several other similar events. The corrections in dates and minor incidents, will not be apt to strike the eye at first, but the importance of accuracy in such matters will be readily admitted. Excerpt from A Contribution to the Bibliography of the History of the United States Navy Several years ago the compiler desired to add to his collection of books on the United States Navy, and to that end began the collection of titles of books not in his possession. At the time he had no intention of printing the list, merely desiring it for his personal use. As it assumed large proportions, and through many inquiries from people interested in the subject he learned that no bibliography of the His tory of the United States Navy had been published, he concluded to print a limited edition for the benefit of others. In the work of compilation he has been assisted by Miss Agnes C. Doyle of the Boston Public Library and Mr. Axel Mothe of the New York Public Library. Miss Doyle has also revised and edited the work. Excerpt from History of the United States Navy, and Biographical Sketches of American Naval Heroes: From the Formation of the Navy to the Close of the Mexican War The present work, therefore, differs from any yet published. It is intended to combine the advantages of all, so far as this is possible, within the compass of a single volume. It gives in a compact mass, what is elsewhere to be found only in detached portions. The plan, it is believed, is entirely ori ginal. And the conviction that it will be found acceptable, also, has induced the publishers to expend large sums, in order that the volume may be issued in a style worthy of the subject, and worthy likewise of general patronage.
