Excerpt from A Geography of the British Isles In this Series I have tried to embody the experience of a teacher and of an examiner. This experience has led me to several conclusions, which will, I believe, be confirmed by most practical teachers who are interested in Geography as a subject of real educational value: - 1. That map in text-books cannot generally be used directly with the text, as it is impracticable to hare the book open in more than one place at a time; bat that their presence in books has led to a regrettable neglect of the Atlas. 2. That an excessive variety of type and other mechanical devices for classification confuse the average pupil. 3. That most text-books contain much which would be better learned from the Atlas, or which is only an unnecessary tax on the memory. Consequently, this Series contains no maps and little variety of type; and I have intentionally avoided mentioning, e.g. exact heights, distances or sizes, small industries, and unimportant places. Wherever any definite comparisons are made, they are intended only for reference, and not to be learnt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Geography of the British Isles Some words of explanation may be offered in adding another to the long list of already published Geo graphies of the British Isles. The present little work has been prepared in accordance with the plan of instruction advocated in my Teaching of Geography. It is mainly designed for children who have already acquired an elementary knowledge of what geography is, not from class-books, but from practical instruction based on the topography of their own district. Excerpt from Commercial Geography of the British Isles The occupations of men, therefore, have a natural distribution. On the coast they become fishers, sailors, or traders; on the plains, farmers; on the hills, shepherds; while mining and other industries depend ing upon coal and iron spring up where these sources of natural wealth are available. Looking at a physical map of the British Isles, the south-east of Great Britain and the centre of Ireland are seen to be plains; the northern half of Great Britain and all the west and the corners of Ireland are generally mountainous, with plains of small extent. The south-east and east of Great Britain, therefore, are mainly agricultural, and the west mainly pastoral. Agriculture is more developed in Ireland on the central plain than in the mountains to the north west and south, but cattle-rearing is everywhere more important than the cultivation of the soil. This is largely due to the heavy rains, an illustration of the fact that climate as well as relief helps to deter mine the nature and distribution of occupations. Excerpt from Our Home-Lands: A Regional Study of the Geography of the British Isles When the great Roman general, Julius Caesar, came and saw and conquered our island, there was living in Rome another famous man named Virgil. He was not a soldier, but a poet, and is often spoken of as the Prince of the Latin Poets. In one of his books, Virgil wrote of the island that Caesar had conquered, and said that it was remote from the world. At that time, two thousand years ago, there were far fewer people in the world than there are now. The great nations who made up the Old World of people lived around the Mediterranean, or Middle Sea. They believed that the earth was flat; they knew nothing of the New World of America, or of the great land we call Australia they knew very little of the continent of Africa. Excerpt from Pictorial Geographical Readers: The British Isles Let us look at the Globe and try to find out the British Isles. There they are, two little patches of red in the blue ocean. The larger patch is called Great Britain, the smaller patch Ireland. The northern part of Great Britain is known as Scotland the southern part is called England, and the western part Wales. Great Britain, Ireland and the adjacent islands make up the British Isles. There are many other red patches on the globe. They represent countries which form part of the British Empire. Look at that large square with the little dark square in the corner. The small square represents the size of the British Isles, the large square the size of the British Empire. If you measure them, you will find that the British Empire is over eighty times as large as the British Isles. Excerpt from The Senior Geography The letters which the editor of this series has received in recent years from all parts of the country, and from the colonies, have induced him to plan these books. Instead of two unrelated sections of physical and political geography as in older textbooks, an attempt has been made to write a series of geographies which contains the information usually expected from candidates for preliminary, junior, and senior local examinations, and other examinations of a similar standard, on geographical and educational lines. The first or preliminary volume was largely descriptive, and aimed at presenting definite pictures of the different regions of the globe, together with an outline of the salient topographical features. In the second or junior book a more definitely causal treatment was aimed at, and attention was specially drawn to the interrelation between configuration, climate, vegetation, and human activities. The geography of the British Isles was selected for specially full treatment on these lines, and the inductive method was freely employed to establish general geographical truths which are taken as axiomatic in the present volume. In this, the third or senior volume, it is assumed that pupils already possess some concrete knowledge of the world as a whole, and are familiar with the outlines of the general and economic geography of each continent. This renders it possible to proceed to the consideration of the world according to its Natural Regions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Building of the British Isles: Being a History of the Construction and Geographical Evolution of the British Region Geographical Evolution - The Object of this volume is to treat the geological history Of the British Islands from a geotectonic and geographic point Of view, that is to say, to deal with the physical conditions under which the successive rock-groups were formed; the rocks themselves being described only so far as is necessary for ascertaining whence their component materials were derived, in order to form some conception of the relative position Of land and water during each Of the successive periods of geological time. The existing geographical and physical contours of the British Islands are the outcome of the long and varied geological history pertaining to this particular part of the world. There are few other regions of the earth's surface which in so small an area exhibit so many different systems of rocks as are to be found in the British Islands. England alone includes portions of nearly all the rock-systems which are found on the continent of Europe. Each Of these rock-groups was formed during the maintenance of certain physical and geographical conditions which were different from the conditions both Of the preceding and of the subsequent periods. When, therefore, we are able to form some definite conception of the geography of the British region during one particular period Of past time, we are restoring one phase in the geographical evolution of our islands.
