A proposta da obra é apresentar a inclusão do negro e do pobre no futebol brasileiro, num recorte histórico entre 1900 e 1927. O futebol era um esporte refinado praticado pela alta sociedade carioca que via na sua prática um estilo de vida, um elemento de diferenciação. Dessa maneira, o livro discorrerá sobre as medidas implementadas para afastar as classes populares desse esporte que hoje é uma paixão nacional, quase que uma identidade do nosso brasileirismo. Destaco também a importância do Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama no processo de luta contra o racismo e preconceito, pois revolucionou o futebol da época com medidas corajosas e inovadoras que soavam como absurdas, haja vista que as elites procuravam fazer do futebol uma prática de diferenciação social que pudesse expressar sua suposta "superioridade". Por fim, essas elites não conseguiram manter por muito tempo a prática do futebol como seu monopólio, já que em 1910 a sua prática já começava a despontar em todas as periferias do Rio de Janeiro (Capital da República), que evidentemente, a partir do ano de 1923, com a ascensão do Vasco à primeira divisão, se consolida de vez no seio e imaginário popular. Esse pioneirismo transformou o futebol num elemento agregador, ao qual negros e pobres não só têm acesso, mas conseguem ascender socialmente.

Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the nineteenth century had the largest population of urban slaves in the Americas—primary contributors to the atmosphere and vitality of the city. Although most urban historians have ignored these inhabitants of Rio, Mary Karasch's generously illustrated study provides a comprehensive description and analysis of the city's rich Afro-Cariocan culture, including its folklore, its songs, and accounts of its oral history. Professor Karasch's investigation of the origins of Rio's slaves demonstrates the importance of the "Central Africaness" of the slave population to an understanding of its culture. In articles for the newspaper O Brado Africano in the mid-1950s, poet and journalist José Craveirinha described the ways in which the Mozambican football players in the suburbs of Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) adapted the European sport to their own expressive ends. Through gesture, footwork, and patois, they used what Craveirinha termed “malice”—or cunning—to negotiate their places in the colonial state. “These manifestations demand a vast study,” Craveirinha wrote, “which would lead to a greater knowledge of the black man, of his problems, of his clashes with European civilization, in short, to a thorough treatise of useful and instructive ethnography.” In Football and Colonialism, Nuno Domingos accomplishes that study. Ambitious and meticulously researched, the work draws upon an array of primary sources, including newspapers, national archives, poetry and songs, and interviews with former footballers. Domingos shows how local performances and popular culture practices became sites of an embodied history of Mozambique.
