Segundo ela, o mexilhão dourado é apenas um exemplo de destruição por invasão de espécies exóticas, podendo se tornar um direcionador na construção de políticas internacionais em defesa da biodiversidade. Ela afirma que a solução preliminar internacional de troca de água de lastro em alto mar é uma orientação ainda sem comprovação de sua eficácia. "Por isso, é tão importante debater essa questão e propor alternativas, pois a troca de água de lastro em alto mar traz riscos sobre outras espécies nativas marinhas. A destruição provocada por invasores só não é pior que a devastação do ambiente por assoreamento, seca, canalização de rios ou, em terra, pelas queimadas e desmatamentos", concluiu. No Brasil, o mexilhão dourado foi descoberto na Bacia do Rio da Prata, fronteira com a Argentina, na década de 90 e, desde então, tem preocupado o continente Sul Americano, pois vem se alastrando pelas regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro-Oeste do Brasil, alcançando as maiores hidrelétricas brasileiras.
