Doomsday . . . Judgment Day . . . Day of Reckoning . . . The Apocalypse . . . As the man with the sandwich board might say, "The end of the world is nigh." Nobody knows for sure whether it will be an act of God, a natural event, or a man-made disaster that causes the final bell to toll for humankind, but it is surely primed and ready to clang. A Is for Armageddon is your ruthlessly clever and gorgeously hopeless guide to the possible—if not imminent—ultimate destruction of our civilization and planet. From animal flatulence to economic collapse to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—from lethal genetic modification to runaway obesity, super volcanoes, and World War III—the seeds of our doom have been sown . . . and our most dire possible fates have been stunningly illustrated in this edifying and uniquely entertaining volume of inescapable horrors, fatal missteps, and the end of everything.

An extraordinary illustrated guide to the apocalypse, or, the end of the world as we know it. Doomsday. Judgment Day. Day of Reckoning. As the man with the sandwich board says, The end of the world is nigh! For as long as mankind has walked this earth, we have lived under the shadow of extinction. Whether it be from an Act of God, a natural disaster, or as the result of a man-made disaster, never before has the threat of annihilation been more pressing than right now, at the beginning of the 21st century. A is for Armageddon is a brilliantly funny, thoroughly factual and stunningly illustrated guide to every feasible disaster scenario -- from plague, drought and famine, to animal flatulence, obesity and World War III, from economic collapse and terrorism to ozone depletion and chemical sink -- accompanied by a critical timeline for when we might expect to die -- now, soon, later, or too late. . . it's already started. From the author of the bestselling 101 Things to Do Before You Die series, this veritable panoply of impending doom, is a catalogue of disasters that will inform and delight in equal measure. Just don't read it too close to bedtime!

The dispatch of an Ottoman Army by Australian-led Imperial air power in the Wadi Fara on 21 September 1918 occurred just five years after the advent of military aviation in Australia. In 1914, the fledgling Australian air service operated the flimsy Bristol Boxkite; four years later it was flying the far more advanced Bristol F2B Fighter. This leap forward represented a profound progress in technology that has typified the technical development of aviation, particularly in Australia ever since. Ironically, on 21 September 2014, 96 years after the events of the Wadi Fara, Australian squadrons were again deployed to the same part of the world where they would remain for more than three years on operations against extremist terrorism. Armageddon and OKRA contrasts these events, a century apart, in the context of the development of Australian air power. The book tracks the history where Australia has maintained a balanced air service compelling high technical, logistics and engineering standards, and effective training and command and control systems, for more than 100 years. These processes were as applicable a century ago as they are today. By examining these operational events, the author establishes the connection that access to the technology associated with air power is intrinsically linked to Australia’s enduring foreign and defence policy – more so, that military power is a means to an end, and never an end unto itself.

Planning Armageddon written by Nicholas A. Lambert and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with History categories.

Before the First World War, the British Admiralty conceived a plan to win rapid victory in the event of war with Germany-economic warfare on an unprecedented scale. This secret strategy called for the state to exploit Britain's effective monopolies in banking, communications, and shipping-the essential infrastructure underpinning global trade-to create a controlled implosion of the world economic system. In this revisionist account, Nicholas Lambert shows in lively detail how naval planners persuaded the British political leadership that systematic disruption of the global economy could bring about German military paralysis. After the outbreak of hostilities, the government shied away from full implementation upon realizing the extent of likely collateral damage-political, social, economic, and diplomatic-to both Britain and neutral countries. Woodrow Wilson in particular bristled at British restrictions on trade. A new, less disruptive approach to economic coercion was hastily improvised. The result was the blockade, ostensibly intended to starve Germany. It proved largely ineffective because of the massive political influence of economic interests on national ambitions and the continued interdependencies of all countries upon the smooth functioning of the global trading system. Lambert's interpretation entirely overturns the conventional understanding of British strategy in the early part of the First World War and underscores the importance in any analysis of strategic policy of understanding Clausewitz's "political conditions of war."
