'In this thrilling debut collection Alexia Arthurs is all too easy to love.' - Zadie Smith Tenderness and cruelty, loyalty and betrayal, ambition and regret – these are the tensions at the heart of Alexia Arthurs’ debut book about Jamaican immigrants and their families back home. Some stories ask big questions about the things that define a person, others explode small moments of deep significance and lasting effect. Sweeping from close-knit island communities to the streets of New York City, How to Love a Jamaican offers a portrait of a nation, a people, and a way of life. Vibrant, lyrical and intimate, this collection of eleven short stories shows Alexia Arthurs to be one of the most dynamic and exciting young authors writing today. It includes the story ‘Bad Behavior’, for which she won the Paris Review’s Plimpton Prize.

Take My Word For It written by Ralph Thompson and has been published by Peepal Tree Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Ralph Thompson's memoir is a fascinating record of a long and full life lived jointly in the worlds of art, literature and business. From a pre-war childhood in colonial Jamaica, Take My Word For It is full of rich insights into both the personal and Jamaica emerging into difficult modernity. Take My Word For It offers rich insights into the long and full life of one of one of Jamaica's finest poets who has also been at the heart of the island's economic and commercial development. There are moving and sometimes comic chapters of a pre-war boyhood in colonial Jamaica in a far from prosperous white and Catholic Jamaican family, the years spent at the Jesuit college of Fordham in the USA, and postwar service in the United States Airforce, serving in Japan. Thereafter Ralph Thompson tells the story of a life at the heart of Jamaica's development of tourism, capitalist modernity and the leadership of Seprod, one of the island's largest companies. There are fascinating glimpses of involvement with Jamaica's sharply divided political life -- between Michael Manley and Edward Seaga. But along with the businessman who can convey something of the excitement of commercial strategy and take-over bids, there is also the artist and poet who has explored the inner life, not least the position of a white man in a Jamaica whose decolonisation has been in part about discovering its black identity. Ralph Thompson has long had a passionate concern with the quality of the education on offer to all Jamaicans, and he writes with feeling about his contribution to the debate around educational issues and practical attempts to make improvements. There is also the loyal supporter of Derek Walcott's Trinidad Theatre Workshop who did much to bring that theatre to wider Caribbean and American notice, who writes about his friendship with Walcott with warmth and insight. Amply illustrated with photographs, images of Thompson's paintings and extracts from his poetry, Take My Word For It is a beautifully and frankly written record of a significant Jamaican life.

From the simple paradise of mango and guava trees in the tropics of Jamaica to the fast-moving, unfamiliar streets of New York, Sandra's life took a change that she couldn't control. When she and her brother Kevin were swept away from their grandmother's rural home by a father that had been absent for as many years as they could remember, it was supposed to be for the best. However, an abusive stepmother and a stepbrother with hands that wandered made Sandra's life a living hell. Forced to find ways to dodge the bullets of the life she'd come to know, Sandra constantly struggled with the crushing blows of a shattered self-esteem, and a father who hid so far in a bottle of booze that he was indifferent to his own flesh and blood. Deep in the pit of depression, Sandra sought the ultimate out, suicide. In the hospital, Sandra learned that the prison she'd desperately tried to break free of followed her. Her own guilt of her circumstances and the resulting self-loathing had become worse than any bars could have ever been. Prescribing more than medicine, Dr. Russo gave Sandra a healthy dose of something she hadn't had since those long ago days in Jamaica, care and concern. With new scenery, and a determination to take control of her life, Sandra learned that living with others required trust and compromise. She also learned that the people who cared the most were the ones who were patient enough to allow her to find herself.

"A truly excellent novel. . . . The morbidly fascinating little twists of human existence are all here: love, sex, life and death, beauty and horror—the works." — Chicago Sun-Times In The Book of Jamaica, Russell Banks explores the complexities of political life in the Caribbean and its ever-present racial conflicts. His narrator, a thirty-five-year-old college professor from New Hampshire, goes to Jamaica to write a novel and soon becomes embroiled in the struggles between whites and Blacks. He is especially interested in an ancient tribe called the Maroons, descendants of the Ashanti, who had been enslaved by the Spanish and then fought the British in a hundred-year war. Despite this history of oppression, the Maroons have managed to maintain a relatively autonomous existence in Jamaica. Partly out of guilt and an intellectual sense of social responsibility, Banks's narrator gets involved in reuniting two clans who have been feuding for generations. Unfortunately, his attempt ends in disaster, and the narrator must deal with his feelings of alienation, isolation, and failure.
