Books about policemen are a dime a dozen. Most of the stories I've seen and read, whether they're fact or fiction, involve cops in the larger metropolitan areas like New York or Los Angeles. If you want to read about shootouts, car chases, and the things Hollywood writes into their scripts for movies or television, you can find those just about everywhere you look. This is a story about a boy who grew up in a Mayberry setting in Central California in the rather innocent era of the 1950s. During the high school years, as with most youths in that age range, I was easily influenced by adventurous people and things. Blessings from above pointed me away from potential lawlessness in the direction of law and order. The last two-thirds of the book covers a colorful career in rural law enforcement. It includes the bad, the good, and the ugly with a generous helping of humor sprinkled in along the way. This is a true story based on my experiences as I recall them. A few of the names herein have been changed to protect the privacy of those individuals. Similarly, many of the book's quoted passages may not be in verbatim dialogue. Still, these or like conversations did take place and the tone of what was said are as true as memory will allow after a lapse of many years. Paintings by Jamie Waddell-Humble

**Winner of the 2021 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards (History, Other)** Lawman or Outlaw? At times, the black-hatted “villains” and white-hatted “good guys” of the Old West were one and the same. Often it was difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish who was who. Sheriff Wyatt Earp stole horses and ran brothels. Albuquerque’s first town marshal, Milton Yarberry, was accused of murder and subsequently “jerked to Jesus.” Burt Alvord, town marshal of Willcox, Arizona, and friends, robbed a train. Alvord then deputized these same friends into a posse to apprehend the robbers. It came as no surprise when his posse came up empty handed. Justice Hoodoo Brown and Deputy JJ Webb ruled Las Vegas as leaders of the Dodge City Gang until they were run out of town by citizens fed up with their type of justice. “Mysterious” Dave Mather and even two of the Dalton Gang spent time behind a badge, as well as behind bars. When Outlaws Wore Badges explores the double lives of outlaw lawmen through some of the West’s most memorable frontier characters.

Lines And Shadows written by Joseph Wambaugh and has been published by Bantam this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-20 with True Crime categories.

The true story only Joseph Wambaugh could tell. A band of California cops set loose in no-man’s-land to come home heroes. Or come home dead. Not since Joseph Wambaugh’s bestselling The Onion Field has there been a true police story as fascinating, as totally gripping as Lines and Shadows. The media hailed them as heroes. Others denounced them as lawless renegades. A squad of tough cops called the Border Crime Task Force. A commando team sent to patrol the snake-infested no-man’s-land south of San Diego. Not to apprehend the thousands of illegal aliens slipping into the U.S., but to stop the ruthless bandits who preyed on them nightly—relentlessly robbing, raping, and murdering defenseless men, women, and children. The task force plan was simple. They would disguise themselves as illegal aliens. They would confront the murderous shadows of the night. Yet each time they walked into the violent blackness along the border, they came closer to another boundary line—a fragile line within each man. And crossing it meant destroying their sanity and their lives. Praise for Lines and Shadows “With each book, it seems, Mr. Wambaugh’s skill as a writer increases. . . . In Lines and Shadows he gives an off-trail, action-packed true account of police work and the intimate lives of policemen that, for my money, is his best book yet.”—The New York Times Book Review “A saga of courage, craziness, brutality and humor. . . . One of his best books, comparable to The Onion Field for storytelling and revelatory power.”—Chicago Sun-Times

Thriller enthusiasts who relish the precise execution of an international thriller, but who seek the psychological depth and believability of a protagonist who simultaneously fields professional and personal life challenges, will find this a gripping story that's hard to put down.” --Midwest Book Review, Diane Donovan (regarding Any Means Necessary) “One of the best thrillers I have read this year. The plot is intelligent and will keep you hooked from the beginning. The author did a superb job creating a set of characters who are fully developed and very much enjoyable. I can hardly wait for the sequel.” --Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos (re Any Means Necessary) A complete bundle of 13 books in THE FORGING OF LUKE STONE and the LUKE STONE THRILLER series by USA Today bestselling author Jack Mars, author of the critically-acclaimed Agent Zero series (with over 5,000 five-star reviews). Here, we see the forging of one of the world’s toughest—and most lethal—soldiers: Luke Stone. A 29 year old veteran who has seen enough battle to last a lifetime, Luke is tapped by the Special Response Team, a secretive new FBI agency (led by his mentor Don Morris) to tackle the most high-stake terrorism operations in the world. The police, in a frantic race against time, call in the FBI—and Luke Stone, head of an elite, secretive, department within the FBI, is the only man who can handle it. Luke realizes right away that the terrorists’ aim is to create a dirty bomb, that they seek a high-value target, and that they will hit it within 48 hours. Caught in a chase that pits the world’s most savvy government agents against its most sophisticated terrorists, Agent Stone peels back layer after layer.
