Frank Farr learned the hard way that a rip cord is not infallible when you have to open a parachute. He survived that lesson to spend six months in German prison camps after the Massacre at Merseburg Nov. 2, 1944. He notes here that young men sequestered away from all womankind dont always talk about girls. Starve them enough, and they talk about food instead. Read how World War II flyers in German prison camps passed the time (books, games music), what they talked about (food, girls and flying) and what they dreamed about (family, loved ones and freedom).

Courage. Heroism. Endurance. These qualities are emblematic of the stories of thousands of Canadians who fought during World War II. Canadians like Tim Carlon, a young Montrealer who went off to war, doing his part in a global struggle whose legacy remains as relevant as ever eight decades later. Tim’s Story: A Canadian Airman in World War II, is a tale of an airman who was decorated for gallantry in 1942, only to be wounded and shot down over Germany the following year. He spent over two years in POW camps and survived two forced marches in 1945 before the war finally ended. But Tim’s sacrifice didn’t end when he came home. A war-related illness claimed his life a few years after he returned to Canada. Brian Buckley (whose wife is Tim Carlon’s niece) wrote this account to preserve the memory of a brave young man, one of Canada’s many heroes whose stories and legacies deserve to be remembered. A tribute to all those who served, Tim’s Story also aims to deepen Canadians’ collective understanding of our country’s role in a conflict that largely shaped the modern world.

A cold winter morning in the Ardennes Forest, 1944, and Hitler launches his last and most audacious attack on the unprepared Allies. Standing between the German forces and the desperately regrouping Allies were just eighteen young Americans, hidden in fox holes. In a fierce day-long battle, this small band of soldiers repulsed the German attack three times, inflicting severe casualties and defending a strategically vital hill despite being vastly outnumbered. They surrendered only when they ran out of ammunition. But then the real battle for survival began ... Alex Kershaw's brilliant account draws on the words of the decorated men who fought this heroic action, bringing vividly to life their struggle on the battlefield and later off it - as POWs.

Second Lieutenant Tommy Hart, a navigator whose B-25 was shot out of the sky in 1942, is burdened with guilt as the only surviving member of his crew. Now he is just another POW at the fiercely guarded Stalag Luft 13 in Bavaria. Then routine comes to a halt with the arrival of a new prisoner: First Lieutenant Lincoln Scott, an African American Tuskegee airman who instantly becomes the target of contempt from his fellow soldiers. When a prisoner is brutally murdered, and all the blood-soaked evidence points to Scott, Hart is tapped to defend the soldier. In a trial rife with racial tension and raw conflict, where the lines between ally and enemy blur, there are those with their own secret motives, and a burning passion for a rush to judgment, no matter what the cost.

A descendant of early pioneers of New South Wales, James Rowland combined a thirst for adventure with a strong sense of duty. Aged just 22, he became a Lancaster pilot in the elite Pathfinder force, flying 34 missions over occupied Europe and being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In January 1945, he was the only survivor of a collision with a Canadian aircraft over Germany. After narrowly escaping being shot as a spy, he spent the rest of the war as a POW. Returning to the RAAF in 1947, Rowland was a test pilot during the early years of the supersonic era, and played a leading role in the Mirage procurement. His leadership qualities and technical expertise saw him become head of RAAF engineering in 1972, and, in a controversial appointment, Chief of the Air Staff in 1975, the first and still the only engineer to head the RAAF. In 1981, Rowland was appointed Governor of New South Wales, a position he held with distinction for eight years. A brilliant pilot and aeronautical engineer, who combined a strong commitment to duty with a great sense of fun, Rowland has a well-earned place among the great leaders of the RAAF.

On May 8, 1944, the B17 climbed and joined other bombers in the cloudy skies over England. It had been a smooth takeoff. Thomas L. Thomas adjusted his navigator's seat in the plane's nose section and glanced out toward the clouds that quickly enveloped the ground beneath the plane. In one sense, he felt somewhat sheltered when the plane joined other planes 25,000 feet above the English Channel. He imagined that the layer of clouds hid the Flying Fortresses from the flak of enemy fire. However, he knew it was a false sense of security.
