David Jou (Sitges, 1953) és autor d’una àmplia obra científica i poètica. La seva obra poètica està aplegada en edició conjunta en els volums L’èxtasi i el càlcul i L’huracà sobre els mapes (Columna edicions, 2002, 2004) i ha estat parcialment traduïda a diverses llengües. Com a assagista, ha publicat El laberint del temps, La simfonia de la matèria (Viena edicions, 2006), Ciència, fe, poesia (Fundació Joan Maragall-Claret, 2003) i L’escultor Pere Jou (Grup d’Estudis Sitgetans, 1991). És catedràtic de física a la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, membre de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans i de la Reial Acadèmia de Doctors.

Nuclear Physics 2 explores the applications of various radioisotopes for dating and nuclear medicine imaging. It introduces the theoretical and experimental facts from the observation of the red shift in the spectrum of galaxies (1913), and the discovery of the cosmic microwave background (1965) that led to the validation of the Big Bang model, through which all known chemical elements are created via nucleosynthesis processes. This introduction is followed by a description of the nuclear reactions involved in primordial, stellar, and explosive. The principles of carbon-14, potassium-argon, uranium-thorium and uranium-protactinium dating, along with the principles of lead-210, caesium-137 and beryllium-7 radiochronometers applied to dating, are also described. An overview of the birth of nuclear medicine is given, from the first use of radioisotopes as tracers in plant biology in 1913, to the development of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in 1975. The method of synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals, quality control of radiopharmaceuticals and the experimental methods of the determination of radiochemical purity are presented. The description of the principles of PET and Single-Photon Emission Tomography (SPECT), the presentation of the different radioisotopes used in TEMPS and PET, as well as the presentation of the main scintigraphies and their uses in nuclear medicine conclude the topics studied.

As language historians we believe that the subject of our study is neither natural languages nor idiolects which speakers have always been able to develop individually (loosely what Chomsky calls L-i), but rather the social constructions of reference shared by all speakers (basically what Chomsky terms as L-e ). In this context the language historian essentially studies how a public L-e is built such that it can be understood as the language of all (i.e. hiding L-i variations) and also how L-e succeed in replacing the primary reality of idiolects, even if only in the imagination. Writing represents a crucial turning point in language construction, because it made it possible to materialize the abstraction that, until then, related speakers could only guess and besides it comes into competition with individual languages. In modern centuries, the provision of grammars, dictionaries and other such learning tools and systematizing instruments strengthens the idea that, because of their normative character, languages can be learned through study. Mythical stories encourage the achievement of prescriptive rules and lead speakers to link emotions to their language. Therefore, the topics of reflection that we want to discuss in this volume are: Norms, Myths and Emotions related to language construction.

Joan B. Pastor Aicart (Beneixama, 1849-1917) va ser metge rural i un escriptor molt prolífic, tant en castellà com en valencià. Si bé ha estat conegut com a poeta, la seua obra abraça tot tipus de gèneres literaris: assaig, teatre, articles de premsa, crítica literària, narrativa curta, etc. Fins ara, la seua figura ha passat desapercebuda dins del moviment de la Renaixença valenciana, tot i ser l'autor més premiat al llarg dels territoris de parla catalana durant aquells anys de renaixement lingüístic. El caràcter conservador i religiós d'una bona part de la seua obra i el seu tarannà social discret, que el va fer viure lluny de la capital i sempre més atent al treball que no a l'aparició en els cenacles literaris de l'època, han mantingut probablement oculta la importància dels seus escrits. Aquest llibre, que intenta ser una reconstrucció de la seua biografia intel·lectual, presenta també una breu selecció dels seus textos més rellevants.

The multiplicity of parallel identities that make up our personalities is a phenomenon in which our individual identitary choices merge with diverse collective identities. The present volume is a contribution to the field of Identity Studies, but from a clearly linguistic perspective. It unites several contributions which analyze discourses centered on national or regional identities – as for instance the Catalanity of the frontier city of Lleida, the connection between the natural environment and the conceptualization of deictic space, or the dialectics between center and periphery. Other chapters try to shed light on problems arising from the particular situation of Catalan as a non-state language. The contributions thus range from aspects of Cultural Studies on identities and their constituting discourses to Catalan linguistics and sociolinguistics.

This book significantly revises the conventional view that the Jewish experience in medieval Spain--over the century before the expulsion of 1492--was one of despair, persecution, and decline. Focusing on the town of Morvedre in the kingdom of Valencia, Mark Meyerson shows how and why Morvedre's Jewish community revived and flourished in the wake of the horrible violence of 1391. Drawing on a wide array of archival documentation, including Spanish Inquisition records, he argues that Morvedre saw a Jewish "renaissance." Meyerson shows how the favorable policies of kings and of town government yielded the Jewish community's demographic expansion and prosperity. Of crucial importance were new measures that ceased the oppressive taxation of the Jews and minimized their role as moneylenders. The results included a reversal of the credit relationship between Jews and Christians, a marked amelioration of Christian attitudes toward Jews, and greater economic diversification on the part of Jews. Representing a major contribution to debates over the Inquisition's origins and the expulsion of the Jews, the book also offers the first extended analysis of Jewish-converso relations at the local level, showing that Morvedre's Jews expressed their piety by assisting Valencia's conversos. Comparing Valencia with other regions of Spain and with the city-states of Renaissance Italy, it makes clear why this kingdom and the town of Morvedre were so ripe for a Jewish revival in the fifteenth century.

Llengua catalana. Pàgines 68. Conté figures. Carl Jung i Wolfgang Pauli van treballar respectivament en el camp de la psique i en el camp de la física de la matèria. Aquests dos sectors es consideren absolutament incompatibles entre si. De fet, el materialisme científic nega l’existència de qualsevol component psíquic a l’univers conegut. Tot i l'enorme distància entre les seves disciplines, els dos científics van establir una col·laboració que va durar més de vint anys. Durant aquest període no van deixar mai de buscar un "element unificador", capaç de conciliar, a nivell científic, les teories de la dimensió psíquica amb les de la dimensió material. Malauradament, no van poder completar aquesta teoria durant la seva vida. . Tot i això, eren els profetes d’una nova interpretació científica de l’univers. De fet, l’evolució del coneixement en el camp de la física quàntica, i sobretot les confirmacions experimentals de fenòmens com l’entrellaçament quàntic, han fet que les seves teories siguin actuals. Avui apareix amb força la idea d’un univers que no es divideix en “objectes materials”. L’univers no està dividit sinó que consisteix en una realitat única, feta d’esperit i matèria. Aquesta és la realitat que Jung i Pauli van anomenar "Unus mundus". La matèria i la psique tenen la mateixa dignitat i junts contribueixen a l’existència de l’univers. El "Cenacolo" és un lloc de coneixement i estudi. Creiem que és l’entorn més adequat per reprendre el treball des del punt en què van deixar Carl Jung i Wolfgang Pauli. Podem afirmar que, actualment, l’actualitat científica ennobleix les seves investigacions i les projecta cap a interpretacions encara més atrevides del que ells mateixos havien imaginat. Carl Gustav Jung va ser un psicòleg i psicoterapeuta suís, molt conegut per les seves teories sobre l'inconscient col·lectiu i sobre la sincronicitat dels esdeveniments. Pauli és un dels pares de la física quàntica. Sobre Pauli podem dir que l'any 1945 va rebre el premi Nobel pels seus estudis sobre un principi bàsic de mecànica quàntica, conegut com el "principi d'exclusió de Pauli".
