Europa, como proyecto de unión transnacional, está siendo cuestionada más que nunca desde la creación de la Unión Europea. El auge de los populismos de ultraderecha, cuyo éxito se basa en parte en el rechazo de la idea europea, o el controvertido Brexit son solo la expresión más clara de un euroescepticismo que ha cobrado mucha fuerza en los últimos años. Por otro lado, no son pocas las voces que se alzan frente a este panorama, lideradas principalmente por el presidente francés Emmanuel Macron, que aboga por un “renacimiento de Europa” y por reinstaurar el proyecto europeo en la sociedad y reintegrarlo en la agenda política. Uno de sus principales argumentos en este contexto se basa en la historia y la memoria común que une a la ciudadanía europea y ayuda a superar nacionalismos.Pero, ¿qué es Europa y cómo se puede definir la memoria europea? ¿Existe un pasado común lo suficientemente fuerte como para crear una identidad comunitaria? ¿En qué medida hay que entender esta memoria cultural como transcultural? ¿Y cómo se puede evitar que precisamente el enfoque transcultural nos haga caer en la trampa de anteponer los Estados nación a la idea de Europa?Estas son algunas de las cuestiones que se discutieron en el marco de las jornadas celebradas en noviembre de 2018 en la Facultad de Filología de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid bajo el mismo lema que da título a este volumen. Inspired by the insights of Reinhart Koselleck and François Hartog, two pioneers of the "temporal turn" in historiography, Clark shows how Friedrich Wilhelm rejected the notion of continuity with the past, believing instead that a sovereign must liberate the state from the entanglements of tradition to choose freely among different possible futures. He demonstrates how Frederick the Great abandoned this paradigm for a neoclassical vision of history in which sovereign and state transcend time altogether, and how Bismarck believed that the statesman's duty was to preserve the timeless permanence of the state amid the torrent of historical change. Clark describes how Hitler did not seek to revolutionize history like Stalin and Mussolini, but instead sought to evade history altogether, emphasizing timeless racial archetypes and a prophetically foretold future.

El autor (o autores) intima(n) a sus lectores a abandonar las peligrosas rutas de la curiosidad intelectual y la libertad de pensamiento (3,21-24) y a acatar la disciplina del sometimiento a la Ley. Queda abortada así el ansia por el cultivo de la inteligencia emocional y de la experiencia estética que definían a la antigua sabiduría global y globalizadora, para la que la meta no era el hogar, sino el camino. La propuesta de Ben Sira de una ortopraxis exógena generaba sin remedio la regresión a un estéril infantilismo religioso. De algún modo, se puede decir que Jesús Ben Sira representa el declive y la muerte de la sabiduría en el seno del judaísmo.
