"Country Girl is Edna O'Brien's exquisite account of her dashing, barrier-busting, up-and-down life."--National Public Radio When Edna O'Brien's first novel, The Country Girls, was published in 1960, it so scandalized the O'Briens' local parish that the book was burned by its priest. O'Brien was undeterred and has since created a body of work that bears comparison with the best writing of the twentieth century. Country Girl brings us face-to-face with a life of high drama and contemplation. Starting with O'Brien's birth in a grand but deteriorating house in Ireland, her story moves through convent school to elopement, divorce, single-motherhood, the wild parties of the '60s in London, and encounters with Hollywood giants, pop stars, and literary titans. There is love and unrequited love, and the glamour of trips to America as a celebrated writer and the guest of Jackie Onassis and Hillary Clinton. Country Girl is a rich and heady accounting of the events, people, emotions, and landscape that have imprinted upon and enhanced one lifetime.

A Little Country Girlby Susan CoolidgeCandace makes the first long trip of her young life alone. Everything is new, from the ocean views, to the fashionable people she encounters; from the museum-like home, to the unfamiliar cousins. How will she adapt to the new experiences and will she overcome the homesickness she feels? Will she adapt her country ways and enter society, or be an embarrassment to her fine relations? Etiquette and style can be learned; but kindness, common sense and a loving heart are inbred. (source: Librivox)

Excerpt from A Little Girl's Visit to a Country Garden You have said a great deal, Madam Carnation, said London Pride, and we think you have made out a good case; but we inust hear all. I must say a word, my old friends, said a. Very popular flower, a sturdy \vallflowcr, in the beauty of a bright old age. If you will have a new Queen, what do you think of an honest, plain flower like me? I was well known and well liked before half these painted strangers had ever been seen in England. Iam nursed by the peasant in his cottage, and by the poor workman in his humble garret. I cheer the prisoner in his cell, and adorn the parterre of the palace. I wave my dark blossoms on the walls of many a grand city in ruins, on the holy mountains of Palestine, and in the bright gardens of heathen Persia. The smoke of the city never flfil'tmls me, and I give my sweets as freely to the poor as to the rich. If you think as I do, you will at once choose me for your Queen. Excerpt from Piney Ridge Cottage: The Love Story of a "Mormon" Country Girl The wagon road led from the station of Croft straight across the Flat to the Ridge which formed one of the foot-hills to the mountains farther on. Here a narrow valley opened from the hills on to the Flat. In this valley flowed, during the winter and spring, a small stream. To get to Piney Ridge one followed this stream or stream bed for a few miles, until a dugway was reached which led up from the valley to the higher ground on the right. Once on top of the bench, Piney Ridge came into view. If the season was right one would then see a most beautiful sight. Piney Ridge cottage stood close to where the side hill reached the level bench land. The house, small but architecturally correct, painted white, nestled m a bower of green. At the rear on the 810pe grew low bushes; farther up a few cedars Spread their branches; and standing in a nearly straight row, were exactly twelve pine trees, reaching above the dwarfed shrubbery and low-growing cedars. These pines, the only ones to be seen in the valley, had given Piney Ridge its name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
