This is a complete revision of a detailed resource which has been the essential guide for church musicians working in the Episcopal church for over 20 years. A Guide to the Practice of Church Music (1989) was originally written by Marion J. Hatchett, who taught for many years at the Episcopal seminary at Sewanee, was key in developing materials for The Hymnal 1982. This updated revision contains brief, but articulate discussions of the role of music in the church, the variety and nature of music ministries (people, cantor, choirs, organists, directors, instrumentalists, clergy, and music committees); principles for the selection of hymns, psalms, canticles, and other service music and their sources in materials from CPI and beyond; guidance for planning services for all rites of the church in the BCP and the Book of Occasional Services. Updated revision includes hymnals, electronic resources, and materials published since The Hymnal 1982.

Excerpt from Manual of Church Music: For Choirmasters and Organists Unfortunately the edict of our Sovereign Pontiff has been received by many in this country with misgivings as to the possibility of putting it into practice. I trust that this timid ity will be overcome by the help of your Manual and by the encouragement given by the happy results already obtained in those churches where the Reverend Pastors, in obedience to the Pope's orders, have courageously undertaken the desired reform, guided by methods more or less similar to the one you advocate in your boo-k. Indeed, it is to be deplored that in a country like this, where so much zeal is shown in promoting whatsoever tends to en hance the dignity, majesty, and sanctity of our Sacred Mys teries, any hesitation should exist in endeavoring to bring about such a necessary reform in church music. And the more so because if the Gregorian Chant may appear in some places difficult of execution, the same cannot be said of modern church music which is also permitted. For, whilst our Holy Father in the said M otu proprio regards Gregorian Chant as the only chant which possesses in the highest degree the quali ties proper to the Sacred Liturgy, yet, taking into consideration the progress which the art of music has made, admits also in the Church modern music, provided that it be sober and grave, containing nothing profane and in no way unworthy of the liturgical functions. Congregations that are alive and vibrant have vital music programs. How did they get that way? There are sensible and practical steps to develop such a program which begins with a clear vision of the end product. This book addresses the many interrelated issues of defining and embracing the leadership role in the church music program that is required of clergy in parish ministry and essential for a healthy congregation. Clergy and musicians work toward the same goals; however, clergy are trained differently from musicians. How does this fact impact their relationship, and how can they learn to work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect? The practical issues of employment can be addressed more effectively in this atmosphere. If one is looking for the right musician for the parish, what qualities does one seek? How does one find such a rare and gifted individual? A successful search complete, how does the clergyperson work harmoniously with the music leader? This book provides a blueprint for: • Developing a vision for music in your parish • Locating a musician who is a partner in ministry • How music comes and goes in the church’s repertoire • Moving from musician as performer to musician as pastor
