Excerpt from A Manual of English Literature, Vol. 2 of 2: And of the History of the English Language, From the Norman Conquest; With Numerous Specimens Queen. In Spenser, the allegory, whether historical or moral, is little more than formal: the poem, taken in its natural and obvious import, as a tale of knights' and ladies' gentle deeds - a song of their fierce wars and faithful loves-has meaning and interest enough, without the alle gory at all, which, indeed, except in a very few passages, is so completely concealed behind the direct narrative, that we may well suppose it to have been nearly as much lost sight of and forgotten by the poet himself as it is by his readers here, the allegory is the soul of every. Stanza and of every line - that which gives to the whole work whatever meaning, and consequently whatever poetry, it possesses - with which, indeed, it is sometimes hard enough to be understood, but without which it would be absolute inanity and nonsense. The Purple Island is rather a production of the same species with Dr. Darwin's Botanic Garden; but, forced and false enough as Darwin's style is in many respects, it would be doing an injustice to his poem to compare it with Phineas Fletcher's either in regard to the degree in which nature and propriety are violated in the principle and manner of the composition, or in regard to the spirit and general success of the execution. Of course, there is a good deal of ingenuity shown in F Ietcher's poem; and it is not unimpregnated by poetic feeling, nor without some passages of considerable merit. But in many other parts it is quite grotesque; and, on the whole, it is fantastic, puerile, and wearisome. Excerpt from A Popular Manual of English Literature, Vol. 2 of 2: Containing Outlines of the Literature of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United States of America With Historical, Scientific, and Art Notes Dr. Samuel Johnson not only represented the literature of the forty years succeeding the death of Pope, but also ruled over it as king. Of his death, in 1784, Craik says, "It was not only the end of a reign, but the end of kingship altogether in our literary system. For King Samuel has had no successor; nobody since his day, and that of his contemporary Voltaire, has sat on a throne of Literature, either in England or in France." These years, known in literature as the Johnsonian Age, are the transition between those widely different epochs - the placid, unruffled, Classical Age and the tumultuous Age of Revolution. It was essentially an Age of Prose. English Sovereigns. (George II., -1760. [House of Brunswick.] (George III., 1760- Culmination Of Classical Prose. - Dr. Johnson. As classical poetry attained its highest development under Pope, so did classical prose under Dr. Johnson. "His phraseology rolls ever in solemn and majestic periods, in which every substantive marches ceremoniously, accompanied by its epithet; grand, pompous words peal like an organ; every proposition is set forth, balanced by a proposition of equal length; thought is developed with the compassed regularity and official splendor of a procession. Art cannot be more finished, or nature more forced." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Manual of English Literature and Language, Vol. 1 of 2 The order in which four at least of the five sets or classes of languages have been named may be regarded as that of their probable introduction into Europe from Asia or the East, or at any rate of their establishment in the localities of which they are now severally in possession. First, ap parently, came the Celtic, now driven on to the farthest west; after which followed in succession the Latin, the Go thic, and the Slavonic, pressing upon and urging forward one another like so many waves.
