Excerpt from Lectures on Fevers These lectures were delivered in the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York, to the Class of 1876-77. With unimportant alterations, I now offer them as they were photographically reported by Dr. Win. M. Carpenter. As in the preparation of my "Lectures on Diseases of the Lungs, Heart, and Kidneys." it has been my custom after careful reading and close analysis of the subject of each lecture, to trust that the stimulus of the class would enable me to present the most recent views of acknowledged authorities, combined with the results of my own clinical observation and experience, in so simple, intelligible, and concise a manner that each student might master the prominent points. I have adopted an etiological basis in the classification of fevers, and have endeavored to include in a few general classes all the numerous types described by different writers. I have referred to theoretical questions only so far as was necessary in order to the proper understanding of subjects under consideration. The Bibliography which accompanies these lectures includes those books, monographs, and theses which have been published since 1850, nearly all of which have been written, or are in circulation, in this country. Excerpt from d104-Book of the Eruptive and Continued Fevers It may be desirable to state very briefly the circumstances under which this work has come to see the light. To write a d104-book on Fever while the splendid monograph of Charles Murchison is our possession to all time may well be deemed presumptuous. But, on the threshold, I would disclaim any intention of allowing the present work - "hoc parvum opusculum" - to enter the lists with that unrivalled masterpiece. However, even since Dr. William Cayley, in 1884, edited, with excellent good taste and literary skill, the posthumous edition of Murchison's Treatise, the study of the Continued Fevers has received a great impetus, and the necessity of a sound knowledge of Fever by every practitioner of medicine has been more and more recognised. As regards the Eruptive Fevers, we possess no work at all analogous to, or comparable with, that of Murchison on the Continued Fevers. It is true that a very full and accurate description of these diseases is to be found in the third edition of Hilton Fagge's and Pye-Smith's "d104-book of the Principles and Practice of Medicine," published in 1891. The standard works on Practice of Medicine also contain a number of chapters devoted to this subject; and I am aware that a d104-book upon the Eruptive Fevers by Dr. Alexander Collie has been published within the last few years. Notwithstanding all this, I make bold to say that full justice has not up to the present been done to so important and fascinating a theme. Excerpt from Practice of Medicine: A Manual for Students and Practitioners To render this Epitome of Practice suitable for hasty reference by physicians, as well as for the use of students, it was deemed advisable in its original preparation to avoid undue curtailment of the most important subjects, such as typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. For this reason the necessary restrictions as to space were met by the exclusion of diseases of the pharynx, larynx, and tonsils, subjects which are treated fully in the companion volume on Diseases of the Nose and Throat. Under the headings of Diagnosis have been mentioned a few of the most important differential points of each disease. To Dr. D. Mitchell Prudden the author is indebted for assistance in the preparation of the introductory remarks on immunity. In the present revision the same principles have been followed as in the former editions. While the entire volume has been thoroughly revised, the principal changes have been necessitated by advances in the knowledge of infectious diseases and diagnostic methods. Partial reclassification of diseases and exclusion of obsolete material has permitted the inclusion of Acute Poliomyelitis.
