It is true many books have been written on the subject, but their great brevity, on the one hand, or an unnecessary diffuseness on the other, have prevented them from meeting with acceptance at the hands of physicians and students. In the one class belong the little handbooks of Rutherford and Schaefer, which have done much to simplify and therefore popularize histology, but they were intended for beginners, and especially students doing class-work under the laboratory system now so much in vogue. But both physician and student need something of wider scope, and they have been compelled to turn to Klein Smith, Stricker, or Frey, though no one of these excellent works is thoroughly adapted to their wants. Excerpt from Manual of Pathological Histology, Vol. 1: General Pathological Histology, Lesions of the Elements and Tissues The first edition of this manual was published in three parts; the first in 1869, the second in 1873, and the third in 1876. It has been very favourably received by the French medical public, and the successive issues demanded have afforded us the satisfaction of seeing that we have succeeded in making the most important data of pathological histology part of the ordinary knowledge of students. The first edition is now out of date and no longer abreast of science, so that we have been obliged almost entirely to recast the work. The general account of normal histology placed at the beginning of the first volume has been remodelled and brought up to the level of the progress made in the last ten years. In this decennial period normal histology has made relatively greater progress than pathological histology, but the latter, which is based on the former, and which borrows from it not only its discoveries but its methods, has also undergone great changes. Thus in some chapters we have preserved nothing but the heading, and we have added many chapters which were not in the first edition. Many new illustrations have been added, and in every detail we have striven to make the second edition worthy of the success which attended the first. The entire work forms two volumes: the first contains the general pathological anatomy of the tissues; the second will include the pathological histology of the organs. Excerpt from Pathological Technique: A Practical Manual for Workers in Pathological Histology The order and method of procedure in making a post mortem examination, including the various incisions, may be said to have been planned for the routine examination of normal or diffusely diseased organs. As soon as a notice able focal lesion is present the order of procedure and the customary method of removal and of incision must be so altered as best to display the lesion. Instruments - The following instruments will be found extremely useful in the autopsy-room, although not all of them are necessary: The autopsy-table should be large, so as to accommodate on it the instruments and several dishes in addition to the body. It should have a slightly raised edge, and should slope gently toward an Opening in the center for the escape of fluids. The table is best made of zinc, and along one edge should have a centimeter scale. The water for use on the table is best supplied by a rubber tube from an overhead pipe reaching to within 60 to 100 cm. Of the table.
