Excerpt from A Manual of Lessons in Old Testament History: For Academic Grades The lessons here submitted for your consideration, and for your use if you find them adapted to your needs, are the lessons I have been using for a number of years in my own work. The chief difficulty in the study and teaching of Old Testament history is that there is too much matter for one year's work; but as one year is all that can possibly be allowed for the subject, we must be content, and do our best with the time that is ours. The lessons are therefore long ones. I wish they could be shorter, but know of no other way to cover the subject. They may not seem uniform in length; and they are not, if one considers chapters and verses only. It has seemed to me necessary to be governed more by subjects than by the amount of words to be read and studied; therefore while the average assignment is three chapters, there are some lessons that require more, and some fewer. A few notes will be found in the lessons. These for the most part are quotations from authorities. I think it would be well if there were more of these; but because of a persistent eye trouble, I have not been able to make the selections. I should be glad of your cooperation in this respect, so that future editions, if there shall be such, may contain more valuable notes. Outline maps are placed through the book where they are required by the lessons. These maps may be obtained in loose leaf form for notebooks and drill work if so desired. The review questions I give my pupils as a help in preparing for tests, and sometimes take the questions for examination from these questions. They may be used in various ways. The lists of proper names may be used not only as an aid in spelling and pronunciation, but as a test, by asking, Who was Aaron? or, What was Abana? With the hope that these lessons may lighten your labors, and help your pupils to a better understanding of this important subject, I submit them to you for your use, and suggestions for improvement. Excerpt from Lessons in Old Testament History I have ventured on no theory of inspiration, but have treated the Old Testament as containing a revelation of God to a people chosen to prepare the world for a yet larger revelation, and to make possible for the future a faith purer and nobler than they could receive. That this revelation was necessarily progressive, and that as each higher stage of development was reached, it was liable to invasion from error and superstition, I have not failed to indicate; but I trust that each lesson will be found to offer to the teacher the opportunity of performing the duty, which must after all be left to him, of showing how the New Testament lies hidden in the Old, how the Jewish was a preparation for the Christian dispensation. That the working out of the Divine purpose in Israel proceeded in spite of conceptions of the Divine character which were often very imperfect, seems to me to be a point that cannot be with too much insistence presented in school teaching. It is to keep this point in view that the proper name Jehovah so frequently takes the place here of the word Lord. The fact that the name found no entrance into the New Testament of itself marks a progress in theological conception, and suggests that there might have been current, among the people who so reverenced it, ideas of the Divine character out of keeping with the revelation of the Father made in Jesus Christ. I have therefore employed this proper name, not only where, as in the great decision at Carmel, the very point of the narrative lies in the choice of Jehovah instead of Baal as Lord, but in all cases where imperfect elements of feeling or belief make themselves prominent; where Israel's God is represented as a national, not a universal sovereign; where His worshippers appear to think of Him as partial to themselves or vindictive to their foes. Paul Driscoll in 1948, Mrs. Driscoll helped her husband build the Mid-City / Crescent City Baptist Church, where they served for 58 years. That is the question, but it cannot be answered until we find out what the child is, - what his tendencies are during this time. (Of course no age limit can be set with absolute definiteness; this one is used only as a general indication.) The study of child life with the differing periods of development is only in its embryonic stage, and when we consider actual conditions, corresponding needs, and how to supply them, we see that no hard and fast lines can be laid down with the command, "This is the way, walk ye in it." But light has been thrown on this problem farther than it has been applied, especially in relation to the spiritual training of the little child. Some things are self-evident. Commonly speaking, the small boy of this age is said to be "a young savage."
