Excerpt from A Manual of Medieval and Modern History Medieval history covers the thousand years which divide the breaking up Of the Roman dominion in the West from the formation of the modern European States-system, near the close of the fifteenth century. This interval between the Old order and the new may, how ever, be conveniently viewed ia two widely contrasted periods. During the first six hundred years, the forces which tend to anarchy and disso lution were apparently the stronger, excepting while they were held in check by the genius of Charlemagne. These six centuries are known as the Dark Ages. Their chief events were the migrations of the northern tribes; the repulse of the Saracens, who aimed to annex Europe to the dominion of the Caliphs; the revival of the Western Empire, and the rise of the Feudal System. The next four centuries are more properly called the Middle Ages. They are marked by greater activity Of the tendencies to order and civilization: tribes settle into nations the remnant of the migratory impulse expending itself in pilgrimages and crusades; languages are developed and improved; chivalry refines the manners of the warrior, but itself declines, as'feudal chiefs become subject to consolidated mon archies; learning is diffused, and industry attains something of its just dignity and importance. Excerpt from Medieval and Modern History This book, as the title indicates, covers both the Middle Ages and modern times. The chapters treating the period from the sixth to the seventeenth century are reproduced from my Early European History, with minor modifications and with additional maps and illustrations. The entire work has been written since the outbreak of the World War, and its probable consequences have been kept constantly in mind. If it be true, as Bishop Stubbs once said, that nothing in the past is dead to the man who would learn how the present comes to be what it is, then surely the prime business of the author of a text-book dealing with European history is to make plain the remoter causes, as well as the immediate ante cedents, of a struggle epochal in the life of humanity. How far I have succeeded in doing so must be left to the reader's judgment. The Suggestions for Further Study contain a classified and annotated bibliography of those historical works which appear to be reasonably well adapted to the needs of pupils in secondary schools. References to the appropriate chapters of my Readings in Medieval and M odern History are also inserted in footnotes. This volume consists of extracts from the sources, chiefly of a biographical or narrative character. As stated in the preface, Each chapter deals with a single epoch or personality and presents the work of a single author. The passages quoted are long enough to make a definite impression on the reader, thus avoiding the scrappy effect necessarily produced by a set of short, unrelated extracts. Since many of the selections are good literature as well as good history, I hope that students will be tempted to turn to the original sources from which excerpts have been taken, and to read in them at length for their own enjoyment. Excerpt from New Medieval and Modern History This book is something more than a revision of the author's Essentials in Mediæval and Modern History. As the task of revision progressed, its scope was so enlarged that, by reorganization, extension, and rewriting, the result became practically a new work. It has been deemed best, therefore, to give to the book a distinctive name, and at the same time to continue the publication of the old volume. In general the aim in this book has been to decrease the amount of space devoted to political and military details, and to increase the emphasis on social, industrial, and cultural topics. Full treatment also is given to the important events which have occurred since the Essentials in Mediæval and Modern History was first published. Instead of treating these in a supplementary chapter, they have been woven, so far as practical, into their logical places in the narrative. In conformity with what is now the established tendency, greater emphasis has been put on the events of our own time than on those of former ages. It is now generally recognized that a leading aim of the study of history is to enable one to understand the world of to-day. Profuse and adequate illustrations and maps are inserted in proper relation to the text. It is believed that the breaking up of the chapters into lettered subdivisions will facilitate the assignment of lessons, and it is hoped that the new teaching apparatus will prove especially useful. A table of rulers is inserted at the beginning of the volume for convenience of reference; lists of important dates follow the several chapters; and in connection with each search topic a few carefully selected references are printed to guide the pupil in his collateral reading. No pains have been spared to adapt the book to the needs of the schools and to the powers of the pupils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from New Medieval and Modern History The continent of Europe is divided into three distinct parts. (i) The southern portion comprises the great peninsulas of Greece, Italy, and Spain. It is cut off from the central mass by an almost unbroken mountain chain, formed by the Pyrenees, the Alps, and their eastern continuations. (2) North of this lies a central land mass, stretching east and west across the con tinent, which broadens out in the east to form the great plain of Russia. (3) Beyond this lie the British Isles and the Scan dinavian peninsula. These lands are separated from the central portion by the English Channel, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea, which is a sort of secondary Mediterranean. Excerpt from Mediaeval and Modern History The revised text of my Medieval and Modern History has already appeared in a two-volume edition under the titles of T lie Middle Ages and The Modern Age. It is here presented, somewhat abridged, in a single illustrated book designed as a companion volume to my revised Ancient History. The lists of books for further reading and study appended to the different chapters are in the main a selection from the fuller bibliographies of the earlier revised edition. The series of maps includes all the more important ones of that impression, besides fifteen new colored maps, eleven of which have been engraved expressly for the present work. The two entitled respectively The Danelaw and Angevin Dominions are taken by kind permission from Professor Edward P. Cheyney's A Short History of England, while Europe after 1815 and Europe at the Present Time are through like courtesy drawn from Professor James Harvey Robinson's An Introduction to the History of Western E rope.
