This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ... fig. 40, and fig. 41, page 197. AMPUTATION AT ELBOW-JOINT. We shall not describe this operation, as its advantages are very questionable on the living subject, and on the dead it is better to perform a resection of the joint. 1 The patient's right-hand side, i.e. outside the right arm, inside the left. M AMPUTATION OF ARM. Amputation through the Upper Arm may be effected (a) by the circular operation; (b) by double flaps; (c) by integumental flaps and circular division of the muscles; (d) by Mr. Teale's operation. Choice of Operation.--When operating on the living subject this will depend very much on the available integument for covering the stump, and in cases of injury on the condition of the bones, skin, blood-vessels, &c. (a) THE CIRCULAR OPERATION. Instruments required.--1. An ordinary amputating knife. 2. A saw. 3. Artery or torsion forceps. 4. Bone nippers. Position of Operator.--The operator should take his place outside the limb he is about to remove. Position and Duties of Assistant.--The assistant, placed at the shoulder of the subject, should encircle the arm with both hands just below the point at which it is to come off, and should retract the integuments to their utmost. Operation.--The operator, bending both knees, should stoop down and pass his knife around the limb from its under side, and, laying the heel of the blade on the side of the arm nearest to him, should make a circular sweep around the limb, at the same time straightening his own body, and rising to the erect position. This cut should divide the integuments down to the muscles, which must be bared of their covering, to the extent of two or three inches, by dissecting off the skin and subcutaneous tissue; the assistant meantime turning back the parts...

Excerpt from A Manual of Operative Surgery Whenever it was practicable, I have gone to original sources; and, while not making the question of priority in the invention of any method a prominent one, or spending much time in solving it, I have placed the credit where it seemed to belong, and have given references to the authority, so that any error can be readily corrected. Excerpt from A Short Treatise on Operative Surgery: Describing the Principal Operations as They Are Practised in England and France; Designed for the Use of Students in Operating on the Dead Body The Author is not aware that any conuss work exists, the sole object of which, is to ena ble the student to practise surgical operations Upon the dead subject, preparatory to perform ing them on the living; and he has, in common with several of his friends, frequently felt the want of some such guide to direct his stu'dies. Excerpt from Manual of Operative Surgery: Based on Normal and Pathological Anatomy During twelve months' study in the schools and hospitals of Paris, in which the original is used as the standard work by students of all nations, the translator was able to appreciate its great value, not only as a companion and guide in the dissecting and operating theatres, but also as a complete book of reference for all that relates to operative surgery. Whilst in France, and since his return, he has heard many of his professional acquaintance regret their inability to read it satisfactorily in the original; and believing that, notwithstanding the admirable treatises which have appeared during the last few years, there is still room for so comprehensive a book, he has, after obtaining the sanction of the author, determined to bring it more immediately within the reach of the British Surgeon. Excerpt from The Student's Handbook of Surgical Operations The present work is intended for the use of students who are preparing for the final examinations, or who need a hand-book to assist them in carrying out operations upon the dead body. The book is abridged from the author's large Manual of Opera, tive Surgery. That work aims at dealing in an exhaustive manner With the whole subject of Opera tive surgery, or of treatment by operation. This hand-book concerns itself only with the most essen tial and most commonly performed operations. All matters save such as deal with the actual technical details of operative surgery have been omitted. I have not discussed the general principles of Operative surgery, nor have I entered into a critical considera tion of the value of various methods. I have assumed that the reader is familiar With the anatom y of the district concerned in each section, and I have omitted all accounts of the after-treatment. I have given no description of instruments and have left untouched the subjects of mortality and results. Excerpt from A Manual of Operative Surgery, Vol. 1 of 2 AT the request of Sir Frederick Treves, I undertook the responsibility Of a complete revision of this Manual, of which the Second Edition has for some time been out of print. For the delay in the appearance of the Third Edition I must ask indulgence, in view Of the great amount Of work involved, and the extensive changes and additions that have had to be made. The ever-growing importance of Abdominal Surgery rendered it advisable that the Operations on the abdomen should be grouped together in the first volume. Some sections have been curtailed or omitted, such as that relating to Lateral Lithotomy, but most of them have been added to, and several are wholly new. A considerable number of fresh illustrations have been inserted, and a series of coloured plates has been introduced to make clearer the anatomy of certain important Operations. These coloured plates have all been drawn Specially for this Edition from dissections in the Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons and the London Hospital Medical College. I beg to thank the Councils of those institutions for their kindness and courtesy in this matter. So far as present surgical experience goes I have selected for description the best methods of performing the various Operations, but I have endeavoured to avoid encumbering the work with foot-notes and details as to the exact forms of incision, etc., employed by many individual surgeons. Both surgery and medicine, I venture to think, have been greatly hampered in the past by the needless introduction of names.
