Excerpt from A Manual of Plague In commending this work to the public, the medical profession, and particularly to those to whom it has been inscribed, I submit that my long acquaintance with the disease and with its management in India justifies my belief that the object of the author - viz., the production of a concise Manual of Plague - has been adequately attained. Careful revision of the principal chapters convinces me that nothing which is worth recording has been omitted, and I consider the work to be an accurate exposition of our present knowledge of plague, the more acceptable and useful by reason of its freedom from controversial matter. Excerpt from The Great White Plague: Simple Lessons on Causes and Prevention This little book is intended for pupils from the age of twelve or thirteen years onward. It has been the aim to make the material contained in it of practical interest to teachers as well as to pupils. The treatment throughout is simple and concrete, and every principle developed is illustrated with instances drawn from the every-day experiences of children of the ages for whom the book has been prepared. Generous use has been made of photographs and diagrammatic pictures. If the pupils now in the schools could be so instructed in respect to the subject matter of this book that it would take effect in their daily living, tuberculosis would be materially diminished immediately; and in a generation or two it would probably disappear completely. It is doubtful if it can be got rid of in any other way. The authors have had the co-operation of the Wisconsin Anti-Tuberculosis Association in the preparation of the book; and acknowledgment is hereby made of valuable financial help as well as criticisms and suggestions made by the officers of the Association. Acknowledgment is also made of assistance received from Superintendent C. P. Cary, and from Professor W. E. Leonard, Miss M. E. Ashmun and Mrs. E. E. Hoyt of the University of Wisconsin. Excerpt from The Plague of Kaiserdom The Story of the Past had been written in the terms of human misery and, as it had been told and retold, we turned the pages indifferently. Hungry lions devouring men and women in the arena; Nero playing his harp happily while Rome burned; the human sacrifices to Baal; the rack, the ordeals, witchcraft, the savagery of redskins; all these were taught in school only as mere matters of history. There were also tales of the ancient ferocity of the Germans. How they had drunk human blood from human skulls and how they had car ried off captive women into the Black Forests. Excerpt from Studies in the Bacteriology and Etiology of Oriental Plague IT is admitted on all sides that the Bacillus pestis is the real and essential cause of Oriental or bubonic plague, and consequently that the presence of this microbe in any material derived from a human or animal being denotes the disease plague in such a being. It is likewise ad mitted that a patient, although exhibiting one or more symptoms suspicious of the disease plague fever with swollen and in amed subcutaneous lymph glands in one or the other region of the body, cervical, axillary, inguinal, or femoral, - need not necessarily be affected with bubonic plague, notwithstanding that such person might have been indirectly exposed to plague infection. Should, however, in such swollen in amed glands the B. Pestis be demonstrated, epidemiologists and physicians would accept such a case unquestionably as true plague. It is obvious that should this be the case the relation of such a patient towards his surroundings would at once be vastly different from that in which a negative bacteriological result showed that the patient is not affected with that infectious disease, but is suffering from some other malady not requiring those stringent and costly measures that a case of plague requires. Excerpt from The Plague: Bacteriology, Morbid Anatomy, and Histopathology; Including a Consideration of Insects as Plague Carriers It has been my purpose in the preparation of this report to furnish a scientific contribution to the subject and to bring out, if possible, some new points, which might be of interest and value. However, another practical object has never been lost sight of, namely, to provide a guide for those who might be called upon to make a post-mortem diagnosis of the first case of suspected plague in a district. This will always be a matter of great responsibility and sometimes one of considerable difficulty. Unless circumstances compel the contrary, the diagnosis of a plague case, being the first of its kind in a community, on board of a ship, etc., should be confirmed by one well trained in general pathology and bacteriology; or, still better, by one also having experience in the recognition and examination of plague cases. The importance of promptly diagnosing the first case of plague can not be overestimated. This disease does not make its initial appearance as a widespread epidemic, as is often the case with Asiatic cholera, when caused by a contaminated water supply or from other sources of infection. Rather, it begins very insidiously from one or Several imported cases. It is frequently easy to hold the plague in check, provided it is recognized and properly fought at an early stage. This has been proved by the observations made in the cities mentioned above and in Manila. In studying the histopathology of plague a highly interesting change was found in the kidneys, namely, extensive and frequently occurring hyaline fibrin thrombosis of the glomerular capillaries. AS it appears that this change has not been described in the study of the microscopic anatomy of the disease, it has been considered somewhat at length. The histologic examinations in their entirety have led to the conviction that plague in its most common bubonic type should not be looked upon as a hemorrhagic septicaemia, because according to all appearances the infecting bacilli remain practically localized until the agonal stage of the disease is reached.
