The main purpose of this study was to facilitate decisions concerning the effectiveness of modifiers in mitigating pavement distress and improving long-term overall pavement performance in actual field conditions, by utilizing short-term laboratory results and a mathematical prediction model. The modifiers investigated were carbon black, neoprene latex, and polymer modified asphalt (STYRELF). The statistical general linear model (GLM) and the Fisher least significant difference (LSD) were used for the analysis of data. The results of the study indicate that the effect of the modifier on the paving mixture properties was insignificant at low temperatures (down to -17 degrees C), but significant at high temperatures (up to 60 degrees C) where the synergistic effect of the modifier on the paving mixture was pronounced. The VESYS IIIA pavement performance prediction model was utilized to assess the effects, if any, of the modifier on the pavement's overall performance. All the modifiers improve, to some degree, the overall pavement performance.

Data evaluation of the test results indicated the increase of nominal maximum size aggregate amount by 5% to 15% to the standard coarse mix designs had negligible effect on HMA fracture mechanics properties. The SBS polymer-modified asphalt binder improved the fracture mechanics behavior of asphalt mixtures comprehensively. The limestone materials hold advantages over granite materials in improving the performance of thermal cracking at low service temperatures and the rutting resistance at high service temperatures. The master curve construction and linear regression analysis indicated that the total resilient modulus increased with an increase in dynamic modulus at a specific loading frequency. The resilient modulus values were comparable with the dynamic modulus values at the loading frequency of 4 Hz. A correlation relationship was developed for predicting the dynamic modulus from existing resilient modulus values of the asphalt concrete mixture in implementing the mechanistic-empirical pavement design.

The purpose of this research effort was to evaluate the use of warm-mix additives with modified (polymer-modified and terminal blend tire rubber) asphalt mixtures from Nevada and California. This research was completed in two stages: Sasobit and Advera were evaluated in first stage while Evotherm and Foaming were evaluated in second stage. The three main components of the experimental plan include: evaluation of mixture resistivity to moisture damage, pavement performance characteristics of the mixtures, and mechanistic analysis of the mixtures for simulated flexible pavement. The moisture resistivity of all mixtures were checked by Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), and Dynamic Modulus (E*) tests. Dynamic Modulus Ratio (ECR) and Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) were computed at multiple Freeze-Thaw (F-T) cycles for further evaluation of moisture sensitivity of mixtures. Flow Number (FN) and Flexural beam fatigue tests were conducted to evaluate the performance characteristics of WMA additives/technology. The terminal blend tire rubber-modified binder with lime treatment works effectively in resisting moisture damage, rutting, and to significantly-reasonably improve the fatigue life of the WMA Evotherm, Foaming, Advera and Sasobit mixtures. Hence, it is the best solution for the design and construction of sustainable asphalt pavements. The use of terminal blend rubberized asphalt binder is an excellent and economical selection in reducing tire waste and environmental impacts.

In the recent past, new materials, laboratory and in-situ testing methods and construction techniques have been introduced. In addition, modern computational techniques such as the finite element method enable the utilization of sophisticated constitutive models for realistic model-based predictions of the response of pavements. The 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking of Pavements provided an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge amongst experts involved in computational analysis, material production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. All submitted contributions were subjected to an exhaustive refereed peer review procedure by the Scientific Committee, the Editors and a large group of international experts in the topic. On the basis of their recommendations, 129 contributions which best suited the goals and the objectives of the Conference were chosen for presentation and inclusion in the Proceedings. The strong message that emanates from the accepted contributions is that, by accounting for the idiosyncrasies of the response of pavement engineering materials, modern sophisticated constitutive models in combination with new experimental material characterization and construction techniques provide a powerful arsenal for understanding and designing against the mechanisms and the processes causing cracking and pavement response deterioration. As such they enable the adoption of truly "mechanistic" design methodologies. The papers represent the following topics: Laboratory evaluation of asphalt concrete cracking potential; Pavement cracking detection; Field investigation of pavement cracking; Pavement cracking modeling response, crack analysis and damage prediction; Performance of concrete pavements and white toppings; Fatigue cracking and damage characterization of asphalt concrete; Evaluation of the effectiveness of asphalt concrete modification; Crack growth parameters and mechanisms; Evaluation, quantification and modeling of asphalt healing properties; Reinforcement and interlayer systems for crack mitigation; Thermal and low temperature cracking of pavements; and Cracking propensity of WMA and recycled asphalts.
