During World War II, the United States Army Air Corps was led by a cadre of officers who believed implicitly that military aviation, particularly fast heavy bombers at high altitude, would be able to destroy strategic enemy targets during daylight with minimal losses. However, by 1942 the Flying Fortress was proving vulnerable to Luftwaffe fighters. This title charts the United States Army Air Force's struggle to develop a Long-Range Escort which would enable them to achieve the Combined Bomber Objectives and gain mastery of the skies over the Third Reich. The commitment of the USAAF to the Mediterranean and European theatres saw an increasingly desperate need to find a fighter escort, which reached crisis point in 1943 as losses suffered in the Tidal Wave offensive and Schweinfurt-Regensburg-Munster raids emphasised the mounting strength of the Luftwaffe. The USAAF leaders increasingly accepted the probability of bomber losses, and the deployment of the P-51B Mustang solved the problem of Germany's layered defence strategy, as Luftwaffe fighters had been avoiding the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightening escort fighters by concentrating their attacks beyond the range of the Thunderbolt and Lightning. The P-51B duly emerged as the 'The Bastard Stepchild' that the USAAF Material Division did not want, becoming the key Long-Range Escort fighter, alongside the P-38 and P-47, that defeated the Luftwaffe prior to D-Day. As well as the P-51B's history, this title explores the technical improvements made to each of these fighters, as well as the operational leadership and technical development of the Luftwaffe they fought against.

In military parlance, "Mustang" refers to an officer who came up through the ranks. Tom Phillips is a Mustang officer who enlisted in the Air Force as a slick sleeve recruit, almost got kicked out on his third day at Boot Camp, and retired nearly four decades later after leading some of the first American troops into Sarajevo. During a career that encompassed the Cold War, the Cuban Crisis, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, he led an isolated detachment through a terrorist raid, served as Director of the Air Force Military Personnel Readiness Center during Operation Desert Storm, organized one of the largest searches in the nation's history, commanded one of the most unique units in the Air Force, and led troops into Bosnia. Along the way, as a veteran "CO," he dealt with new issues that were vital to the military such as women in combat and "don't ask, don't tell." Interspersed with hilarious tales from an old-time sergeant, Phillips takes his audience on an exciting and valuable journey. His story contains a riveting mixture of emotions: the humor of having major belt buckle difficulties in front of a four star general; the tragedy of notifying parents of their son's death in combat; the anguish of firing a subordinate commander; the peril of leading units in harm's way; the drama of searching for the kidnapped eleven year old daughter of a co-worker; and much more. He talks about ignoring an important regulation, choosing the wrong person for a key job, and about lessons learned over a thirty-six year career. Phillips' concern for his profession and affection for the people in it shine through every page. His insights on leadership, and the successes and failures of leaders and policies-viewed from the unique vantage point of having come from the lowest rung of an organization to positions of senior leadership-should be required reading for leaders and students of leadership in the military and civilian sector.

Memoir of a Military Mustang is a detailed journal of the author's 21 years of service in the United States Air Force. The word mustang' is military slang used to describe an enlisted person who eventually receives an officer's commission. The author served seven years in the enlisted ranks before securing an officer's commission. While sorting through numerous military documents and memorabilia, Major Lear began recalling many of his previous military experiences. This book transports the reader back in time as it reflects on the many ups and downs of his military career. Each chapter highlights a different character trait which was most prevalent during each particular time frame. The author's original intent was to simply document his military experiences; however, the book soon evolved into much more. Life in the military can be lonely if you have no family to share it with. Since his family was so important to his military career, he decided to include their personal experiences within the book. Memoir of a Military Mustang reveals the inner thoughts and feelings of a military professional. While many of the stories he relates are true, some names have been changed to protect the privacy of those individuals. The author hopes the book will provide readers with a positive perspective of the military environment.
