The Temple Scroll is more than the blueprint for a more perfect Temple. It also represents the attempt to create a more perfect Torah. Its techniques for doing so are the focus of part 1, entitled "Revelation Regained: The Hermeneutics of KI and 'IM in the Temple Scroll." This study illuminates the techniques for marking conditional clauses in ancient Near Eastern literature, biblical law, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. It also draws new attention to the relationship between the Temple Scroll’s use of conditionals and the manuscript’s carefully organized spacing system for marking paragraphs. Syntax serves as a technique, no less than pseudepigraphy, to advance the Temple Scroll’s claim to be a direct divine revelation.

The perfect Torah is the medium through which the one, unique God makes himself known. The Judaic statement of monotheism comes to expression in Scripture as perfected by the Oral Torah in its native category-formations, Halakhah, norms of behavior, and Aggadah norms of belief. The Halakhah of the oral Torah conveys monotheism in a philosophical mode, and the Aggadah, monotheism in a mythic mode. What is perfect about the dual Torah, written and oral, is the perfect match between the message and the medium, Halakhah for the philosophical monotheism, Aggadah for the mythic statement of the same monotheism. Chapters One and Two explain the former, Chapters Three and Four the latter. The question answered here concerns how one canonical corpus perfects its companion and produces in consequence perfection: the realization of the initial intent and program of the Written by the Oral Torah. That is addressed by the construction of large exemplary structures of comparison and contrast in the shank of the book. Four principles are established: [1] the perfection through the systematization of the law of the Written Torah by the Oral Torah, in Chapter One; [2] the perfection of the medium of the Halakhah for the message of philosophical monotheism, in Chapter Two; [3] the perfection of Scripture's anomalous writings through the dismantling of one document and the systematic recasting of another, in Chapter Three; [4] the perfection of the medium of Aggadah in its form of narrative for the message of theology concerning God's personality and activity, in Chapter Four.

Commentary On The Torah written by Richard Elliott Friedman and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-18 with Religion categories.

In this groundbreaking and insightful new commentary, one of the world's leading biblical scholars unveils the unity and continuity of the Torah for the modern reader. Richard Elliott Friedman, the bestselling author of Who Wrote the Bible?, integrates the most recent discoveries in biblical archaeology and research with the fruits of years of experience studying and teaching the Bible to illuminate the straightforward meaning of the text -- "to shed new light on the Torah and, more important, to open windows through which it sheds its light on us." While other commentaries are generally collections of comments by a number of scholars, this is a unified commentary on the Torah by a single scholar, the most unified by a Jewish scholar in centuries. It includes the original Hebrew text, a new translation, and an authoritative, accessibly written interpretation and analysis of each passage that remains focused on the meaning of the Torah as a whole, showing how its separate books are united into one cohesive, all-encompassing sacred literary masterpiece. This landmark work is destined to take its place as a classic in the libraries of lay readers and scholars alike, as we seek to understand the significance of the scriptural texts for our lives today, and for years to come.

Religions that center around a revelation--or a 'good book', which is seen as God's word--are widely regarded as irrational and dangerous, based on outdated science and conducive to illiberal, inhumane moral attitudes. Samuel Fleischacker offers a powerful defense of revealed religion, and reconciles it with science and liberal morality.

The Torah is Judaism's most important text. It contains the first five books of the Hebrew Bible-the Tanakh-which are also the first five books of the Christian Bible. The Tanakh is essentially the same as what Christians call the Old Testament, with slight differences in the order and structure of the included books. The Torah begins with the creation of the world and ends with the death of Moses. The first full draft of the Torah is believed to have been completed in the 6th or 7th century B.C., and has been revised numerous times over subsequent centuries. Jewish tradition teaches that the Torah is the revelation of God, given to Moses, and written down by Moses. It is the document that contains all the rules by which the Jewish people structure their spiritual lives. The word torah means "to teach," and it can mean different things in different contexts. In its most common usage, the Torah refers to the Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. But the word torah is also sometimes used to refer to the entire Hebrew Bible-the Tanakh, or Written Torah-and sometimes even the entire body of Jewish law and teachings. Traditionally, each synagogue has a copy of the Torah written on a scroll that is wound around two wooden poles. This is known as a Sefer Torah and it is handwritten by a sofer (scribe) who must copy the text perfectly. In modern printed form, as in this volume, the Torah is usually called a Chumash, which comes from the Hebrew word for the number five. This book, The Torah: The Five Books of Moses, is excerpted from a larger work in progress, The Holy Bible: King James Readers' Version. As you will see, it is formatted like an epic poem-which it is-and feels like you are reading the King James Bible-which you are-but more smoothly, and with more immediate understanding. It also contains details and names missing from the King James Version that turn up in other versions of the Bible. Needless to say, I hope it increases your enjoyment and comprehension of this keystone document, whose influence on Western civilization and culture is without equal. No education is complete without reading it. Twice.

Whether you are studying the Bible for the first time or you're simply curious about its history and contents, you will find everything you need in this "accessible, well-written handbook to Jewish belief as set forth in the Torah" (The Jerusalem Post). George Robinson, author of the acclaimed Essential Judaism, begins by recounting the various theories of the origins of the Torah and goes on to explain its importance as the core element in Jewish belief and practice. He discusses the basics of Jewish theology and Jewish history as they are derived from the Torah, and he outlines how the Dead Sea Scrolls and other archaeological discoveries have enhanced our understanding of the Bible. He introduces us to the vast literature of biblical commentary, chronicles the evolution of the Torah’s place in the synagogue service, offers an illuminating discussion of women and the Bible, and provides a study guide as a companion for individual or group Bible study. In the book’s centerpiece, Robinson summarizes all fifty-four portions that make up the Torah and gives us a brilliant distillation of two thousand years of biblical commentaries—from the rabbis of the Mishnah and the Talmud to medieval commentators such as Rashi, Maimonides, and ibn Ezra to contemporary scholars such as Nahum Sarna, Nechama Leibowitz, Robert Alter, and Everett Fox. This extraordinary volume—which includes a listing of the Torah reading cycles, a Bible time line, glossaries of terms and biblical commentators, and a bibliography—will stand as the essential sourcebook on the Torah for years to come.

The Friend of God And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. (James 2:23) In every instance where you find the word believe in either testament, it involves trust, obedience, fidelity, and behavior. To believe and not conform to that belief is unbelief! James is plain-spoken, allowing little room for modern word parsers to twist his meanings. In another verse, James plainly says faith without works is dead. If we are to believe James, then its clear that faith and belief prescribe submission for our own good to the loving rule of divine authority, else they aredead! The Prescription is not intended to be an entertaining storybook; rather it is a study book teaching righteous government. It is a commentary on those aspects of the books of Moses that pertain mostly to godly government; personal, community, institutional, and state government. Although it addresses some religious aspects, its focus is upon the underlying principles of conduct which are both universal and eternal, whether one agrees with them or not. Wherever there are two or more in close proximity, there must be understanding and agreement in order to maintain harmony, without which either tyranny or anarchy will rule by force. Anyone who disregards Gods loving instructions for righteous behavior cannot rightly call himself the friend of God. This malady can be remedied by applying godly principles revealed in The Prescription.

The More Excellent Way written by and has been published by Crucifer Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-10 with Religion categories.

This book investigates why, unlike in the early centuries, the ethical behavior of Christians today is so little different from that of non-Christians. It does this by first reviewing the teachings of Jesus about how Christians are to live and the positive response of early Christians to these teachings. The major portion of the book then documents how the rise of asceticism and the proliferation of church law came to eclipse Jesus' teachings of serving others through unselfish love. It reviews how Chrysostom, Augustine, Luther, and others tried to return the church to the New Testament way of life. The book reaches two conclusions: Christians today prefer to live by only avoiding the gross evils forbidden by the Ten Commandments rather than by Jesus' all-inclusive New Commandment of loving one another as he loved us. They are also willing to offer God the piety of churchly activity, but what God also asks, a life of goodness serving one's fellowman, they feel is just asking too much.
