Nesta precoce análise das mazelas do matrimônio enquanto cerceamento da mulher - "Casada, ela deixa de se pertencer, é a rainha e a escrava do lar" -, Balzac retrata o casamento como pilar da sociedade burguesa (agora pós-revolucionária, "o encanto do amor desapareceu em 1789") na França. Embora intrinsecamente conservador - talvez por isso mesmo -, a imagem que o autor traz da situação de mulheres curvadas sob o peso de suas obrigações sociais e legais é digna de interesse social, histórico e psicológico. Ideologicamente, sabemos que Balzac respaldava o casamento, e esta obra tinha a função de um libelo contra a "leviandade da mulher", dando origem a uma Julie remoída por abissais sentimentos de desejo e culpa, mas o próprio texto e os personagens se encarregam de traí-lo e fica-nos uma forte impressão de que Balzac o denuncia nas entrelinhas em suas estruturas mais fundamentais. [...] O século XIX encarregou-se de amainar os excessos românticos dos personagens, a Revolução Francesa deixara suas marcas (é interessante observar a presença de Napoleão em cada um destes autores) e o que não se consumia em Werther já assume contornos algo mais pragmáticos, ou... modernos, em A mulher de trinta anos.
