Excerpt from A Narrative of a Visit to the Mauritius and South Africa The visit extended to all the towns within the Colonies visited, and to all the Missionary Stations existing in South Africa, at the period Of the visit. In the progress Of the journey, the writer was induced to attempt making rough sketches Of many of the places visited, by finding a difficulty in describing them satisfactorily in words. This circumstance occasioned the pictorial illustrations in the early part Of the volume, now presented to the notice of the reader, to be much fewer than in the middle and the latter part. The sketches of Cape Town and of the Missionary Station Of Zuurbraak, were furnished by other pencils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Wild Honey: Stories of South Africa Vivienne Carlton's hand was against all men as she believed all women's to be against her; but she had learned to conceal the fact well. Not by brandishing her scorn and detestation of it could she hope to get back her own from a world that had treated her badly. Two years of struggling for a living in the ranks of journalism had taught her nothing if it had not taught her this! Ah! What a two years! Instead of enjoying the brilliant peace of the land about her, she was thinking of them now, turning her eyes inward to memories that were poisoning her life. Two years of outward kow-towing to those who had once kow-towed to her, of being cut and ignored by people who when she was heiress to great estates and an ancient name would have petted and fawned upon her, had not the natural haughtiness Of her nature rebuffed them. They remembered those rebuffs when the tide of her family's pro. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Six Months at the Cape: Or Letters to Periwinkle From South Africa This book makes no pretension whatever to the dignity of a treatise on South Africa. I went to the Cape of Good Hope for private purposes, and had not leisure to devote to that important colony the study and investigation which it deserved. By extending their voyages to all oceans from the 1760s onward, whaling vessels from North America and Europe spanned a novel net of hunting grounds, maritime routes, supply posts, and transport chains across the globe. For obtaining provisions, cutting firewood, recruiting additional men, and transshipping whale products, these highly mobile hunters regularly frequented coastal places and islands along their routes, which were largely determined by the migratory movements of their prey. American-style pelagic whaling thus constituted a significant, though often overlooked factor in connecting people and places between distant world regions during the long nineteenth century. Focusing on Africa, this book investigates side-effects resulting from stopovers by whalers for littoral societies on the economic, social, political, and cultural level. For this purpose it draws on eight local case studies, four from Africa’s west coast and four from its east coast. In the overall picture, the book shows a broad range of effects and side-effects of different forms and strengths, which it figures as a "grey undercurrent" of global history.

The Karoo is a vast semi-desert region that extends across parts of the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. This environmentally important area is the largest ecosystem in the country and is abundant in wildlife, vegetation, and ancient history. The Plains of Camdeboo is a celebration of this remarkable landscape. At first encounter the Karoo may seem arid, desolate and unforgiving, but to those who know it, it is a land of secret beauty and infinite variety. For generations author Eve Palmer's family have lived on the Karoo farm of Cranemere, situated on the Plains of Camdeboo. This family have battled for decades against this harsh desert; they have had to adapt to it, learning to fear, respect, and ultimately love it. First published in 1966, The Plains of Camdeboo has become a classic in South African literature. Here is a book that is not autobiography, not history, not botanical study, but all of these and more, blending into a uniquely vivid and personal account of life in the Karoo. The animals, the insects, the wealth of fossils, the countless flowers that spring miraculously to life after rain - all are woven into this rich and engaging story.
