This literature study presents an overview of underwater acoustic networking. It provides a background and describes the state of the art of all networking facets that are relevant for underwater applications. This report serves both as an introduction to the subject and as a summary of existing protocols, providing support and inspiration for the development of network architectures.

This book summarizes the latest research on cognitive network-layer methods and smart adaptive physical-layer methods in underwater networks. Underwater communication requires extendable and delay-tolerant underwater acoustic networks capable of supporting multiple frequency bands, data rates and transmission ranges. The book also discusses a suitable foreground communication stack for mixed mobile/static networks, a technology that requires adaptive physical layer waveforms and cognitive network strategies with underlying cooperative and non-cooperative robust processes. The goal is to arrive at a universally applicable standard in the area of Underwater Internet-of-Things [ISO/IEC 30140, 30142, 30143]. The book is the second spin-off of the research project RACUN, after the first RACUN-book "Underwater Acoustic Networking Techniques" (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-3-642-25224-2)

In a newly deployed ad hoc network there is no structure; this means that the nodes do not have any knowledge of their neighbors' IDs and locations. Thus node discovery is the first step in building the network. The node discovery protocol enables the nodes to find their neighbors and thus brings structure into the network. Simultaneously, the nodes discover the minimum power level required to reach a particular neighbor. Conservation of energy is an important aspect in the design of underwater acoustic networks since the power is battery supplied. Power control is thus used at each node. The key features of the protocol are the simplicity of implementation and the efficient use of power. The protocol that we are proposing proceeds in cycles, with each cycle led by a single node, called a cycle leader. During the discovery phase each new leader starts at the minimal power level, increasing it only when necessary. Also a sign-up sheet is circulated among the leaders. The discovery ends when the sign-up sheet is full (or when all nodes have reached the maximum power level, but some are missing because they are out of reach or have failed). Upon completion, each node has built a list of its contacts which include, at a minimum, the nearest neighbor. The regular network operation commences after the completion of the discovery procedure. We evaluate the performance of the protocol for the no fading (idle case) and under fading. For the ideal case the protocol gives desired results whereas the effect of fading is to degrade the system performance. In order to combat the effect of fading we suggest some tweaks to our protocol and subsequently show how they help to improve the performance.

Seaweb is an underwater acoustic wide-area network connecting autonomous, distributed nodes. Prior iterations of Seaweb relied on operator intervention to initialize and manually configure the network routes. This thesis implements a network discovery process that enables a field of spontaneously deployed, ad hoc nodes to auto-configure for networking purposes. Network routing is initialized as nodes in the network are discovered, with routes chosen according to comparative evaluation of a cost function for all candidate routes. The implemented network discovery process is tested using computer simulation and sea trial data. The resultant network routes obtained upon completion of the ad hoc network discovery process are compared with those derived from Dijkstra's algorithm. It is concluded that the network discovery process always produces a shortest-path route from a master node to any other discovered nodes in the network. Sensitivity studies on the route cost evaluation function are performed, and an alternative network discovery scheme is discussed.

There exists an increasing demand for reliable, high capacity Underwater Acoustic Networks (UANs), as evidenced by the large volume of research invested over the last decade in overcoming the difficulties inherent with propagation of information bearing signals through shallow water regions. Application interests include oceanographic information gathering, environmental monitoring, and coastal defense (anti-submarine and mine/counter-mine warfare). Two specific examples of the recent efforts to develop and field UANs in shallow water regions are the Deployable Autonomous Distributed System funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Autonomous Oceanographic Sampling Network sponsored by ONR and the National Science Foundation. The Deployable Autonomous Distributed System (DADS), envisioned to provide undersea surveillance in littoral waters [Rice 2()()()1, is an underwater array of fixed sensor plattorms, interconnected by acoustic modems. The network connects the remote sensor plattorms to a coim%and center through a portal that relays data received from the acoustic network to the distant coim%and facility across satellite links. Acoustic data is propagated through the network over multi-hop coim%unications paths. The individual hops are configured as half duplex code division multiple access links between discrete modem pairs. Messages are relayed between paired platton%s to minimize the transmit power requirements and reduce the impact of tempon%l, spatial, and frequency spreading of the signal as it propagates through the littoral channel.
