Contradictions between impressive levels of economic growth and the persistence of poverty and inequality are perhaps nowhere more evident than in rural Brazil. While Brazil might appear to be an example of the potential harmony between large-scale, export-oriented agribusiness and small-scale family farming, high levels of rural resistance contradict this vision. In this volume, individual contributions from a variety of researchers across the field highlight seven key characteristics of contemporary Brazilian resistance that have broader resonance in the region and beyond: the growth of international networks, the changing structure of state–society collaboration, the deepening of territorial claims, the importance of autonomy, the development of alternative economies, continued opposition to dispossession, and struggles over the meaning of nature. By analyzing rural mobilization in Brazil, this collection offers a range of insights relevant to rural contention globally. Each contribution in this title increases our understanding of alternative agricultural production, large-scale development projects, education, race and political parties in the contemporary agrarian context. O objetivo deste trabalho e recuperar um tema relevante na obra de Arthur Ramos: o discurso em torno da democracia racial brasileira. Retomando sua producʹao relacionada a questao da formacʹao racial no Brasil, o trabalho permite uma visao geral de sua obra nas decadas de 1930 e 1940. Alem de destacar a importancia do papel do antropologo alagoano para a historia de uma antropologia brasileira, a dissertacʹao visa tornar mais ampla a discussao sobre a democracia racial no Brasil, uma vez que tal discurso tem sido associado principalmente a Gilberto Freyre. O chamado "mito da democracia racial" e interpretado como uma das linhas de forcʹa do trabalho de Arthur Ramos, o centro de uma versao ligada ao culturalismo e que enfatiza a harmonia das relacʹoes raciais como uma especificidade da identidade brasileira. A trajetoria academica do autor e tambem exemplar dos impasses da institucionalizacʹao de uma antropologia brasileira. Assim, a recuperacʹao de sua biografia academica se confunde com a retomada do percurso de uma disciplina que pouco tem contado sobre a sua historia. Tentar compreender o contraste entre a notoriedade da obra de Arthur Ramos em sua epoca e o lugar secundario que a ela foi destinado pelas geracʹoes posteriores e tambem tentar refletir um pouco sobre as razoes dos esquecimentos e dos silencios que fazem parte da historia da disciplina.

Over the past decades, an increasingly influential Political Philosophy approach has been seen to defend issues relating to cultural injustices. The daily struggles arising from political agendas within different societies confirm this. This perspective can be summarised using the Hegelian expression “struggle for recognition”, and it is this expression that underpins the current position of minorities members and their defenders. This means that misrecognition, disrespect, and humiliation form the base of (cultural) injustices and must be avoided. Minorities are a fundamental part of democratic societies, but their rights have not always been respected. Inmigrants are currently the object of xenophobic campaigns. Rome people, the European minority, face additional difficulties, which results in them being key players in cases of indiret discrimination. The distribution of territorial power and the situation of national minorities have been causes of different political problems.“Who am I? Where do I belong?” are questions asking for indentity. Some people argue these should be relevant issues when applying the criminal law, circle of moral incumbency to cover animals -non humans-, arguing that they of life that involves their survival as a whole. Those groups are faced with members and their defenders.This publication is part of the “New Challenges of Law” project.
