In accordance with a request by Army Research Office, Office of the Chief, R & D, the Earth Sciences Division, QM R & E Command, has put into usable form and brought together in this brief preliminary report, a selection from its available material on certain environmental conditions that might affect military logistics in Thailand. A complete study of all aspects of the environment has not been attempted. Material from studies of this Division already completed or in progress particularly dealing with climatology, along with current available literature, has been used. Maps are included showing conditions for sample months, representing the two great contrasting seasons that dominate the climate in Thailand: the wet season, when movement is confronted by deep mud and green, leafy landscapes, and the dry season, with its clouds of dust and brown, dry countryside. Some continuity for the entire yearly cycle is provided by the 12-month graphs of climatic elements for Bangkok, a station fairly representative of Thailand climates (Fgs. 18-20). Figure 20 suggests the extent to which the climates of the different parts of Thailand resemble those of the rest of Southeast Asia. The report is designed to provide some insight into the character of the environment and its relation to human activity in an important part of Southeast Asia. Insects and other animal life are dealt with as a part of the environment of special concern to people moving into the area. Food geography is closely related to natural geographic factors, is an element of considerable practical importance logistically to any American forces in the area, and is of concern in relations with the regular residents.

This book highlights the current issues, challenges, and priorities for climate change adaptation in the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The status of each country was prepared by a consortium of researchers in consultation with National Focal Points of the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC). National documents on adaptation actions, including local scenario and priorities, were reviewed where available and supplemented with an assessment of scientific publications to identify vulnerable ecosystems and regions. Adaptation needs and priorities were determined through stakeholder consultation in the respective countries. This allows for local-level perspectives to be captured and brought to the attention of policy and decision-makers at the national and regional levels. An important lesson from this exercise is that universities and research institutions at the national level have a critical role to play in bridging the gap between science and policy in climate change adaptation. These institutions also have the capacity to continuously facilitate transfer of the best available science for advancing climate change adaptation at the local level.

The climate of Thailand has not been studied in as much depth as in other parts of continental Southeast Asia. The baseline climate of Thailand during 1961-1990 is first analysed using daily observational data from five surface stations, each representing a different region of Thailand, supplemented by the high resolution 0.50 monthly gridded observational dataset, CRUTS2.1. The latter leads to a deeper understanding of the spatial variation in seasonal cycles of key climate variables in Thailand. Also revealed is an increase in the number of tropical depressions crossing Thailand during La Nifia years. It was found that there is a statistically significant intensification (reduction) of precipitation during La Nifia (El Nifio) years at Surat Thani (Chiang Mai) in southern (northern) Thailand during ON (JJAS). This work facilitates the Regional Climate Model validation work which follows. The Providing REgional Climates for Impact Studies regional climate model, PRECIS, was run for the first time over Southeast Asia to specifically study the climate of Thailand. The first phase is model validation during the 1961-1990 baseline period. An ensemble of RCM runs is undertaken to study the sensitivity to the driving GCM. The added value provided by PRECIS in comparison to the coarser driving models is discussed. The possible causes of model bias are investigated. The model projections for the end of this century are undertaken based on high (SRES- A2) and low (SRES-B2) emission scenarios which estimate the range of possible climate change in Thailand. These RCM simulations suggest trends in temperature that are broadly in line with those reported by IPCC. PRECIS A2 and B2 simulations mostly produce small precipitation increases in JJAS and small precipitation increases (decreases) during DJF under the A2 (B2) scenario. Wet season precipitation increases appear to be related to higher rain intensity on fewer rain days.
