Em 17 de novembro de 1889, ocorreu no Maranhão, na cidade de São Luís, um grande protesto popular, majoritariamente de negros, contra o golpe militar que dois dias antes estabelecera a República no Brasil. Os manifestantes acreditavam que o objetivo era destituí-los dos direitos conquistados com a Abolição, cerca de um ano e meio antes, e reescravizar a gente de cor. Quando tentaram invadir e depredar um jornal republicano, uma tropa destacada para proteger o edifício realizou uma descarga de fuzil e, de acordo com números oficiais, matou quatro pessoas e deixou inúmeros feridos. O episódio é conhecido como o Massacre de 17 de Novembro e, junto com outros incidentes envolvendo violência e racismo — como a destruição do pelourinho de São Luís e as prisões e torturas que seguiram o protesto —, é descrito em A nova aurora, novela histórica publicada em 1913. Uma das imagens mais recorrentes acerca da instauração do regime republicano é a do povo bestializado, apático, sem tomar posição diante do golpe de Estado que encerrara o longo reinado de d. Pedro II. Que alternativas e limites políticos e culturais uma sociedade egressa da escravidão poderia oferecer para realizar as promessas de uma cidadania sem distinção de cor, linhagem e origem social?
