O tema do trabalho nasce a partir da observação clínica de pacientes obesos que se submeteram à cirurgia de redução de estômago, porém tendo como centro da problemática a presença de uma fome voraz que não cessava, com a comida ocupando o centro de suas vidas. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo geral a investigação da relação do obeso com a obesidade, considerando o lugar que esta ocupa na economia psíquica do sujeito. O referencial teórico utilizado refere-se aos conceitos psicanalíticos freudianos, que apresenta o corpo erógeno construído pelo movimento pulsional, sendo a relação mãe-bebê o complexo de castração vivenciada na fase fálica e interlocução com as psicossomáticas fundamentais para compreensão da constituição do sujeito e do sujeito obeso. Como objetivo específico, buscou-se situar o contexto pós-moderno e as suas implicações no psiquismo, considerando o ideal de corpo magro, manipulado pelo excesso técnico da indústria da beleza. Pôde-se verificar, após o estudo de caso, com as entrevistas realizadas, que a obesidade se apresenta como um sintoma que leva a uma regressão à fase dual com a mãe. A obesidade se torna um sintoma de defesa contra a castração, que perpassa todas as estruturas: um sintoma histérico – um modo do interrogar o desejo do outro, uma defesa contra a psicose, um traço perverso como forma de fetiche ou uma defesa contra as angústias impensáveis. Pôde-se perceber a presença do movimento da pulsão de morte como um caminho para a morte e, paradoxalmente, um apelo de vida.

Tudo isso com a intenção de provocar reflexões sobre as possibilidades de direção clínica de profissionais de saúde com as contribuições da psicanálise.
