O quinto livro do Aṅguttara Nikāya, a Colecção dos Discursos Numerados de Buda, recolhe 1152 suttas ou discursos cujo tema é centrado em grupos de cinco tópicos. Deve recordar-se que os nikayas foram compostos para serem transmitidos oralmente numa altura em que nenhum sistema de escrita tinha ainda sido reintroduzido na Índia. Nessa altura, os antigos guiões da arcaica civilização Harappa tinham perdido o seu significado não menos do que há quinze séculos atrás e ainda hoje são indecifráveis. Recordar era a chave e a redundância era a garantia de uma transmissão bem sucedida. Todos os suttas encaixavam em sistemas mnemónicos complexos concebidos para serem tolerantes a erros e até à perda de dados. Isto não só serviu na sua época para uma transmissão correcta, como se tornou a ferramenta mais poderosa para apoiar a reconstrução da mensagem. Isto é especialmente importante para The Book of Fives. Este livro contém suttas a serem lidas, excepto as matikas finais contidas no último capítulo. O conteúdo não aumenta o interesse dos seus predecessores na colecção numerada, e em nada substitui a obra principal, o Saṁyutta Nikaya. Na secção de suttas anedóticas, ele regressa à nefandade dos governantes, na linha das anteriores. Neste caso, a legítima e meritória defesa da própria riqueza contra o flagelo dos governantes em AN 5.41 e AN 5.148 está incluída. AN 5.104 reflecte o seu comportamento corrupto. Podemos destacar os suttas em que o Buda denuncia falsos bhikkhus que fingem ser bhikkhus a fim de ganhar a vida propagando falsas doutrinas. Em AN 5.80 e AN 5.167 ele fala daqueles falsos bhikkhus que vivem em casas ou que são ordenados como um meio bastardo de ganhar a vida. Mensagens que são muito actuais hoje em dia. No lado dos suttas falsos marcados com duplo asterisco (**), encontramos desta vez apenas dois suttas falsos. AN 5.229: cobras negras venenosas (I), o Buda supostamente confere às mulheres epítetos como estes: "Ela é nojenta, fedorenta, cobarde, assustadora e traiçoeira. Estes são os cinco inconvenientes de uma mulher". AN 5.230: Serpentes negras venenosas (II). Se o acima exposto não foi suficiente, e para que não haja dúvidas sobre a mensagem misógina que paira sobre o Buda, o sutta acaba assim com a mulher: "Ela é irritável, hostil, venenosa, mordaz e traiçoeira. Este é o veneno de uma mulher: ela é normalmente muito cobiçosa. Esta é a língua bifurcada de uma mulher: ela fala geralmente de forma divisiva. Esta é a traição de uma mulher: ela é normalmente uma adúltera". Em suma, estamos ainda empenhados num árduo e exaustivo trabalho de investigação e reconstrução em linguística comparativa para desvendar alguns textos de pouco interesse.

Embora o Aṅguttara Nikāya seja conhecido como os Discursos "Numerados" ou "Numéricos", sua etimologia pode nos dar pistas sobre sua origem. A palavra Aṅguttara é composta de aṅga, que em pāli e sânscrito significa "membro" ou "divisão", e uttara, que significa "norte". Em sânscrito, "norte" é usado figurativamente também no sentido de superior, acima, de modo que uttara poderia ser traduzido figurativamente como "mais do que" em um sentido incremental. As diferentes categorias nas quais os primeiros textos canônicos budistas anteriores ao escolasticismo Hinayana foram divididos foram chamadas de aṅgas. Originalmente, as categorias eram feitas de acordo com o tipo de material contido nos vários textos e, mais tarde, foram usadas para classificar esses mesmos textos.
