Since the Brexit referendum of 2016, extraordinary uncertainty has hung over the future of the Union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, creating a crisis for the unionist community. A referendum that began on the question of sovereignty quickly degenerated into cries of betrayal over a redrawn border in the Irish Sea, and has led to unionists becoming more insular again, resurrecting ethnic and nationalist notions of what constitutes the Union. In A People Under Siege, historian Aaron Edwards, a native of Belfast, explores the profound challenges facing the community and, in the process, articulates what is really meant by unionism. He explains key developments within unionism over the past turbulent century and examines how a people who believe themselves to be once again under siege are viewed by others beyond their community. In doing so he confronts the narrow, sectional beliefs and prejudices of unionists and loyalists, as well as outlining their more positive and forward-thinking aspects. By embracing these, Edwards explains how divisions could be healed and a position reached of mutual acceptance, tolerance and understanding that will benefit the entire population.

Northern Ireland written by Rona M. Fields and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-09 with Social Science categories.

The troubles in Ireland are not new. They have taken a heavy toll in lives and, perhaps more importantly, in psychological health. This book is not concerned with events in themselves, although it includes historical analysis of the conflict in Northern Ireland. It does attempt to discover the human effects of long-term conflicts such as those occurring in Ireland. From testing and interviews with the children, women, and men of Northern Ireland beginning in 1969, the author has developed a case study of the long-term effects of stress on a population. She identifies certain social control mechanisms that produce a mixture of chaos and docility in the troubled North and argues that England has established these in order to destroy the identity of the people—a process she calls "psychological genocide.", Northern Ireland: Society Under Siege applies social-psychological theory to a concrete and ongoing situation in a way that is illuminating for the general reader and for the specialist. Dr. Fields has done what might appear obvious: find out the effects of stress on a population by going to that population and observing what their lives are like. The remarkable fact is, however, that until now no one has done so., ...a wide-ranging and perceptive book.... A significant thrust and contribution of this book is Fields' discussion of psychological and social control procedures and practices....(Fields') report is a challenge to humanity and an indictment of English patricianism, racism, and imperialism. Alfred McClung Lee, Dr. Rona Field is a brave and deeply compassionate human being, a committed researcher who cannot be intimidated by gunmen, English soldiers, bigots, ferocious politicians, or the horrors of confronting human suffering in dreadful forms. This valiant woman deserves international praise and recognition for the unflinching study of a tragic society. Dennis Clark, National Catholic Reporter

Education Under Siege written by Peter Mortimore and has been published by Policy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-23 with Education categories.

In Education under Siege, Peter Mortimore considers the UK education system as it is and as it might be. Concluding that the United Kingdom has some of the best teachers in the world but one of the most muddled systems, Mortimore proposes radical changes to help all British schools become good schools. He argues that the government should outlaw selection practices, integrate private schools into the state system, and establish processes to ensure that each school has effective teachers and a fair balance of students who learn easily and those who do not. In a concluding call to action, he asks readers who share his concerns to demand that politicians alter the course of education policy.

It is written by practitioners, elected officials, and other policymakers who have firsthand experience with the complex dynamics of policymaking through their professional careers. Its chapters share perspectives on the power of policy from the federal, state, and local levels; demonstrate several evidence-based policy packages developed by leading public health organizations; provide perspectives not only on legislative policy but on the roles of litigation and regulation; and reveal the existing threats to using policy to impact health. We hope that this book will inspire current and future public health practitioners and pMolicymakers to use policy to achieve optimal and equitable health for all"--

Under Siege is Rashid Khalidi's firsthand account of the 1982 Lebanon War and the complex negotiations for the evacuation of the P.L.O. from Beirut. Utilizing unconventional sources and interviews with key officials and diplomats, Khalidi paints a detailed portrait of the siege and ensuing massacres, providing insight into the military pressure experienced by the P.L.O., the war's impact on Palestinian and Lebanese civilians, and diplomatic efforts by the United States. A new preface by Khalidi considers developments across the Middle East in the thirty years since the conflict. The preface also cites recently declassified Israeli documents to offer surprising new revelations about the roles and responsibilities of both Israeli leaders and American diplomats in the tragic coda to the war, the Sabra and Shatila massacres.
