The International Socioeconomics Laboratory™ (ISL) is a global research network of primarily students and young adults that strive to find the most adequate solutions to current socio-economic problems and those that may be just around the corner. We make use of existing records and data to create our own comprehensive models and studies to find plausible routes to the root cause of these problems and see what can be done about them or what knowledge can be acquired. However, our information collection is not limited to what is already in sight; though it may be more difficult given the unprecedented times, we also look to collect information and data through surveys and soon, types of experiments as well. The goal of the ISL is clear; assess and address the issues that face our society through the will and capability of the youth in order to foster a greater one. The work done in the ISL serves as the foundation for the work done by its sister organizations Finxspire and Finxerunt. We plan on having our research be used by Finxerunt to create real political policy that will address the shortcomings that stem from society and its current state. Our research will also be implemented by the committees within the ISL to serve as the basis for its campaigns, podcasts, and films. Both organizations share a common goal in giving their best efforts to bring about positive change in the world. The ISL will be the first and largest of its kind. This spring, the ISL looks to accept over 500+ applicants and aim for a long term goal of over 1000. Through our work, we can bring these students and young adults various benefits ranging from volunteer hours to PVSA awards signed by the President of the United States themself. As many struggle from the implications of the global pandemic, the ISL will serve as an incentive for them to move forward and look towards a brighter future. The ISL serves as an important venue for the youth; the youth are highly capable and intelligent; many of them are cognizant or can identify if their societies are headed in the wrong direction. However, as it stands, it is difficult for the youth to have a say, for they are often overlooked and shadowed. The ISL looks to change that however. The ISL will allow for the youth to have their voices and ideas heard; through us, the youth can look to envision the very change they believe would be necessary to implement or consider. Part of the future of their respective societies starts with the youth, and the future starts with the ISL. The purpose of this research study sets out to identify and further understand how the experiences of First Generation Latino Americans and Dreamers may differ within a college setting due to their status here in the United States; and what that represents on a daily basis. Utilizing detailed, anonymous responses, this phenomenological study utilized a Critical Race Theoretical lens, specifically LatCrit, a theoretical branch extending from Critical Race Theory, to explore topics such as immigration status, language, ethnicity, and culture. According to the results, 91% identified a sense of fear, with approximately 57% identifying a fear based on immigration issues for family or self. Four major themes emerged in the study :( 1) fear, (2) assimilation, (3) expectations, (4) feeling unprepared and imposter syndrome. The findings suggest that both Dreamers and First Generation Latino Americans identify additional stressors or struggles in higher educational settings and are impacted by the current immigration issues in the United States.

Historically, Latino fathers have been characterized as machistas, harsh disciplinarians, and afraid of showing warmth and love to their children, yet they have been described as an integral member of the family and as valuing their role as teachers for their children. Still, few studies have focused on Latino immigrant fathers’ self-reports, despite their contribution to the transmission of cultural values that influence the development of their child’s ethnic identity development. Therefore, this study will focus on Latino immigrant fathers’ cultural values, beliefs, and their understanding of their role as fathers to understand how these factors shape their fathering. Specifically, this study focuses on the following questions: How do Latino immigrant fathers’ cultural values, beliefs, and their understanding of their role as fathers influence their fathering practices? This study employs Knight et al.’s model on Ethnic Identity Development among Latinos as a guide to identify key variables that influence parent socialization on a child’s ethnic identity development, that is, it identifies key factors that may influence culture and ethnic values to be passed on from parent to child. Given the relatively new uncharted research territory on immigrant fathers, this study employs a basic interpretivist qualitative study design and uses qualitative principles of a grounded theory approach to analyze the data. Six fathers, who self- identified as Latino, and as a first generation immigrant, completed in-depth qualitative interviews. All six fathers were single, married, or cohabiting biological fathers, residing with at least one child under the age of five at the time of the interviews. Four fathers’ primary language was Spanish and therefore were interviewed in Spanish. The ages of the fathers ranged from 25 to 43 years (M = 37). Findings will shed light on the paternal strengths, cultural complexities, and social contexts experienced by Latino fathers in the U.S., as well as how Latino fathers socialize their children across two cultural divides.

This study utilized a qualitative approach to conceptualize identity transformation in the immigration experience of Central American and Mexican undocumented women. Currently, limited research exists on identity formation for this first-generation immigrant sub-population. Individual interviews informed by a psychoanalytic lens were conducted with Spanish-speaking women and analyzed through a Interpretive Phenomenological Approach. Literature on identity, gender, and immigration served as a basis for understanding socioecological factors that impact the experience of transitioning from one country to another. Acculturation, social identity models, and intersectionality served as frameworks to understand the evolving and subjective social realities of undocumented immigrants, which are pivotal when working in Latino mental health psychology. Several themes emerged from the analysis of participant's interviews describing key socio-ecological factors that shaped women's identity formation pre-migration as well as political, economic, and social factors that influenced women's decisions to migrate. Additionally, this study also describes the common challenges involved in the acculturation process and the strategies that women used to navigate the such challenges in order to reconstruct new lives in the United States

This study examined first generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in a Latin American country and moved to the U.S. after the age of 12, and second generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in the U.S. or moved here before the age of 12. Literature in the field of cross-cultural adaptation suggests that intercultural communication competence tends to be further developed as a result of intercultural adaptation. The intent of this research was to test this assertion. Data was collected by way of survey administration on a sample of 216 Latino immigrants representing both first and second generations. Three hypotheses guiding this study proposed that first generation immigrants would score higher on cognitive flexibility, intercultural sensitivity, and biculturalism than second generation immigrants, because of their tangible exposure to more than one culture. These hypotheses were not supported; results showed that second generation immigrants scored higher on all three measures than their first generation counterparts. Furthermore, it was expected that a bicultural orientation would be correlated with cognitive flexibility and intercultural sensitivity. However, only a moderate correlation was found between higher scores on biculturalism and cognitive flexibility and intercultural sensitivity. Reasons for these unexpected findings are discussed.

Bridging Cultures: Teacher Education Module is a professional development resource for teacher educators and staff developers to help preservice and in-service teachers become knowledgeable about cultural differences and understand ways of bridging the expectations of school settings with those of the home. In a nonthreatening, cognitively meaningful way, the Module is based on teacher-constructed and tested strategies to improve home-school communication and parent involvement. These innovations were developed as part of the Bridging Cultures Project, which explores the cultural value differences between the individualistic orientation of mainstream U.S. schools and the collectivistic orientation of many immigrant families. The goal of the Bridging Cultures Project is to support and help teachers in their work with students and families from immigrant cultures. The centerpiece of the Module is training resources, including an outline, an agenda, and a well-tested three-hour script designed as a lecture-discussion with structured opportunities for guided dialogue and small-group discussion. Throughout the script, "Facilitators Notes" annotate presentation suggestions and oversized margins encourage integration of the facilitator's personal experiences in presenting and adapting the Module. Ideas for using the Readings for Bridging Cultures are provided. A section of overhead transparencies and handout masters is included. The Module also provides a discussion of the role of culture in education and the constructs of individualism and collectivism, an overview of the effects of the Bridging Cultures Project, and evaluation results of the author's use of the Module in two sections of a preservice teacher education course. Bridging Cultures: Teacher Education Module brings the successful processes and practices of the Bridging Cultures Project to a larger audience in college courses and in professional development arenas. Designed for use in one or two class sessions, the Module can be incorporated in courses on educational psychology, child development, counseling psychology, and any others that deal with culture in education.
